Really? Why not? You're building a significant following and most everyone here knows you, why wouldn't you want to continue on that?

Maybe a cool way to find a balance between releasing freeware vs. payware would be to release the plug-ins free and then sell a custom iPad app to control them. That way you can release free software for the people who can't afford to pay but make a little money from the people who obviously can (since they can afford to have iPads).
i just plug things together in SE, and cant code in C++ or whatever, and have no desire to, its just a fun thing to pass the time when i have no musical things going on...as for an i app, i would never even consider it

Crystal. It's about the only freebie that I use with any amount of regularity.
Meh.

There's quite a few I can't believe are free...you'd have to pay me to use them... :hihi:

heh, yeah, that's true, too.
Someone(if they dare) should start a thread 'What is one synth you can't believe is payware?'...

The mods would probably lock a thread like that, but it would be a funny one, because I've demo'd quite a few piles of doo-dooh that don't even compare with some of the freeware...

I usually like your logic Uncle E, but I can't seem to follow it here. Are you saying that those that have an iPad IN ADDITION to their MAC/PC/laptop and soundcard interface are obviously in a better position to pay because the iPad is an extra extravagance that obviously shows that they are rolling in dough?

Time was that just having a computer put you in the upper crust of society. Add a soundcard and all the other pricey peripherals that musicians use, and I'm not sure the price of an iPad really tips the scales into Mr. Moneybags territory.

brok landers wrote:i actually can't believe why any synth is free. imo they should cost always. not that they should cost the world, but by charging a bit for them, one could reduce the overflow of bullcrap stuff a bit, as well as, if the free stuff is good, the dev could be at least be compensated a bit. a nice side effect could be, that the "everything is free" ruining-mentality could finally vanish in favour of the real value of the products.
Better still, if all developers are compensated for their work, maybe they'll have the motivation to do the best work they can and take that work to completion. Again with the Crystal-Omnisphere comparison, they're basically the same thing yet Crystal was never as good sounding, never as intuitive, and never as all-around finished as Omnisphere is.
wise words. but i'm afraid there's too few here to understand this long term thinking. it's unpopular, and as we know, human beings tend to agree with the popular, not the true. it's just as mark twain once said (highly unpopular, back in the days as well as today):

"rules sadly must exist because mankind simply cannot handle freedom"

or like j.p. satre:

"demokracy is the only option we have, because it's the smallest evil to choose from, not because it is prooven to be good"

by that standing, it would also follow that the most popular synths are not always the best

hehe, and you're quite right with that assumption!

I can't believe no one's mentioned the KORE player. It's like getting a preset only version of Komplete with extra features.

And Kontakt 4 player: http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/ ... kt-player/

The KORE player and the Kontakt 4 player look interesting. I would assume it has some form of Challenge/Response authorization? (If the authorization is as easy as Avast! (Antivirus), I may check it out since it is free. (Free would be the only way I would go for Challenge/Response; and Pace or I-Lock I wouldn't even bother with. Dongle is not too bad, but is a pain).

So, what is the copy protection used on these?

That's OK, it was only a half-baked idea. I was throwing it out there so we could discuss it.

hmm, I guess so, although it doesn't sound very kind when you put it that way. ;)

Perhaps I don't have a full understanding of the iPad. It seems to me like an excellent device for people to use together with their home base system but I don't feel like someone could work effectively with only an iPad, whereas any similarly-priced laptop is very impressive and relatively complete.
