1) I set up to record from the first two inputs on my sound card, hit record with nothing plugged in and recorded the metronome clicks (at very, very low level). Does that mean I've a fault with my sound card? OK, recording two channels is nice (but I'd still like it to be that easy to say "four mono channels" or whatever, rather than just a fixed one or two to a (?mono or) stereo file).

2) I can't find "Hide Rack" or "Show Modular Plugin Area" in the shortcut editor. Are they hidden somewhere I'm not looking? :)

No, it was never like that.

When you draw a new part you can choose between audio part or sequence part, yes, but that has nothing to do with recording. You don't have to draw a part before recording.

Hmmmm. I was trying to record using Drumaxx, and it doesn't work. I've now recorded using a piano, and suddenly it does work. However, one must first click on "Record audio." Not sure a new user would be able to see this step.
I noticed a bug in 3.1 regarding recording the output of a VST. Will be fixed asap. Once M 3.1.2 is available, i'll get back on topic about this. (as explaining it now is obstructed by the bug)

The MU.LAB 3.1.2 test version is available in http://www.mutools.com/mulab/chestnut

What's changed:
  • New: You can create shortcuts for "Select Previous Preset" and "Select Next Preset"
  • Tuned: When adding a module in the MUX, there were too many audio ins/outs in the list
  • Tuned: Audio files: "Edit In Extern Audio Editor" now also is a shortcuttable context function, and accessible from within composer etc.
  • Tuned: More specific alert when adding an audio file that is not recognized
  • Tuned: More skinnable level meters
  • Tuned: Support for alpha-blended text colors
  • Tuned: When choosing a preset, the preset list keeps it folded/unfolded states
  • Tuned: When choosing a preset, stepping thru the presets goes a bit faster now
  • Fixed: A couple of issues when recording the audio output of a module
  • Fixed: When stepping thru the preset list, then once you got into the 'devices', stepping thru the presets stopped working

I applied the 3.1.2 patch and when I open a device it just comes up with a small square box?

The Patch is for the M3.1 (I suspect).

Please have a look in the Modular Area. Whatever comes in in the audio file recorded is recorded. Did you (accidently?) make a connection with the metronome?
OK, recording two channels is nice (but I'd still like it to be that easy to say "four mono channels" or whatever, rather than just a fixed one or two to a (?mono or) stereo file).
Any possible combination is possible: 1 stereo track, 2 mono tracks, 4 mono tracks, 3 mono tracks and 1 stereo track, etc...

It just depends on how many recorders you setup, what you feed into them, and which inputs you use.

Especialy about mono/stereo inputs: It's for this that i added the 2 different audio input module types in the Modular Area: The standard "Audio Input" delivers a single mono or stereo signal depending on its setup (double-click), the "Audio Input (MM)" (MM=Multi Mono) delivers as many mono audio signals as you have active input pins on your audio device.

In fact everything is also possible using the "Audio Input" only. Or with the "Audio Input (MM)" only, together with some Stereo Combinors tp make the stereo combis. But as it all depends on the recording situation (many possible situations!) i conluded having these 2 audio input types was the most gentle/flexible solution, while it's still simple, imho.
I can't find "Hide Rack" or "Show Modular Plugin Area" in the shortcut editor. Are they hidden somewhere I'm not looking? :)

First i thought you were talking about recording playing a VSTi by MIDI.

But so you want to record the audio output of a VSTi?

It's still simple (imho):

1) Plugin the VSTi
2) Enable Record Audio (yes, necessary step, nothing to do about it)
3) Right-click Record Audio and select the VSTi (or the rack it sits in) as "Record From"
4) Hit record

(please make sure to use version 3.1.2 or later as there was some recording bug in the previous 3.1.x)

I'm also trying to record the audio output from a vsti, but can't get the audio to record. I have followed the above steps, but no audio?
I can mix down from midi ok, if that helps.

My thoughts about recording audio in MU.LAB 3.1:

I think the easy system of before is still preserved. If you want to record a single audio track:

* Enable record audio (only to be done first time)
* Eventually select the proper input(s) (stereo from pin 1+2 by default)
* Hit record

Now before MU.LAB 3.1 it was not possible to do a multi-track recording. Now with MU.LAB 3.1 it is possible! That's a great step forward, imho.

The amount of work to setup a multi-track recording is proportional to the number of tracks you want to record. This is similar in other recording apps. The only difference is that in most other apps, audio recording is setup in the track headers. In MU.LAB 3.x, the audio recorders are independent from the track headers, that's all. But that doesn't mean it's more work to set them up, imho.

It's not that -- I'd be getting a full-scale recording of the metronome. In fact, the signal is a tiny tiny tiny blip even with the audio editor fully zoomed. I'm thinking it's because I'd nothing plugged into the inputs and thus they were left floating, with the click on the output causing a voltage fluctuation that got picked up as a signal. What surprised me is that the level was well below the -48dB threshold but still a part was created. (Or did I miss something else? :))

As I'm not going to be someone who uses this "in anger", I'm going to stop worry myself about it :). I agree the current implementation provides great flexibility.

I double-checked, it works fine here.

Are you sure you enabled the record audio button?

Are you sure you selected the proper recording source, i.e. that VSTi or the rack that VSTi is in (in which case it records the output of that rack of course)

Post

Apologies, I forgot to use the patch so didn't have the newest version.
Works fine now. Just need to find my way around Mu.lab now. Starting to warm to it.

Strange. I downloaded both again. Installed them in a new directory and am still getting the synth's show as small boxes when opened. It looks like it's just me then
