Yup, it's excellent and NI doesn't get enough accolades for giving that out for free.zerocrossing wrote:I can't believe no one's mentioned the KORE player. It's like getting a preset only version of Komplete with extra features.
what is the one synth you cant believe is free?

+1 for Oatmeal, but with a remark...
Because of it's default UI I actually CAN believe it's free. Sound is where it matters but a commercial synth needs to look 'finished' and the default skin looks like 'beta-version' to me.
However, with Limeflavour's Lumina-skin Oatmeal has both the sound AND the looks that earns it my vote for 'free synth I can't believe is free'

CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

Just add 2 octaves and polyphonic aftertouch to the Novation Keyboards and you've got the ultimate controller.Uncle E wrote:Kriminal wrote:What if you took that money and manufactured a custom midi controller for use specifically for your synths, I bet you'd come up with something pretty wild.

EASILY Proteus VX. All the sounds on it are good and there's nearly a thousand of them!! (Too many basses though IMHO.)
The only problem is that all the strings FADE in, you can't seem able to make them start straight away. Which means they always sound out of synch with everything else. AARGH!!
Ulrichburke.

Oatmeal, but like as been said the default GUI is naff, but purely on sound quality it is a winner for me.

+1 to this. It's ALMOST the only free synth I use any more. Sounds from serious synths, and - this is critical - a decent tagging browser. I find I have zero patience these days for 10 random banks of 128 random sounds in each.zerocrossing wrote:I can't believe no one's mentioned the KORE player. The other one I do occasionally use (which admittedly is a rompler more than a synth) is Independence Free. Kontakt Player is an essential if you don't own Kontakt too.
I'm the one who can't see what all fuss is about over Synth1 - nice basic analogue tones, low CPU and (browser aside) easy to use, sure... but nothing majorly floats my boat on it.

Oh no... I don't like Apples Business Model...Bronto Scorpio wrote:Very nice idea!Uncle E wrote:Maybe a cool way to find a balance between releasing freeware vs. payware would be to release the plug-ins free and then sell a custom iPad app to control them. That way you can release free software for the people who can't afford to pay but make a little money from the people who obviously can (since they can afford to have iPads).

free is free, free* to me means i dont have to install a program that invades my system, and dont have to 'submit' for some kind of registration. thats work, and work isnt free, no matter how little work it is. if my 'registration information' had no value, KORE (et al) wouldnt ask me for it. people really undervalue themselves and submit left and right whilst thinking they are getting freebies. my only point is 'free is free*'
i dont know too many 'altruistic' corporations, and i'm glad for that because i' not a commie. (no offense to any actual communists intended.)
i want to like synth1 but its well... to clunky, too hard to figure out whats going on. controls too sensitive im not sure. sounds weird unless you are skilled with it. unpredictable and unscientific.
tried to use crystal, but same story, clunky and didnt even like the presets.
guess everything is according to taste.
here is my best try at a list of freeware** synths:
38911bytes
angelina
Drumatic3 (nice because has discrete outputs)
ersdrums (hoping for more outputs)
iblit (just recently discovering this one)
Majkens Chimera
mass (xoxos is a genius, but watch the cpu though)
miniSID
monolisa (this baby is a gem.)
sophia (did nobody mention her? strange gui but nice noise.)
subfreak (straight to the point.)
Vinylusion (more of an instrument than an effect. beats izotope vinyl + free*)
lightbag ii
MrTramp2
Tickyclav
unknown64
**if i am remembering incorrectly and named a payware or shareware instrument, please let me know.
epic thread is epic.

Have to agree - SC1 still feels the most natural to me. I tend to think of it as the propellerhead Reason of the sampler land. Everything just screams twist me and experiment with me.
The filters/effects and the modulation options are enough reasons to justify this beast of a sampler as one of the best things in my software collection (includes kontakt 4, battery 3, guru).
Now if only there was a way to open battery kits in shortcircuit.

Oh and crystal too. It made it into a song I had in which I couldn't believe it was crystal doing that one sound.

It's still available, but the link in the KVR database is out of date, and in order to download it you need to register on the BigTick website (which means giving your e-mail address). It's in the Rhino section, under the "Goodies" tab - but you have to be logged in to see it.D.Wako wrote:It seems angelina is no longer available...
(Is there a place to report incorrect links in the KVR database? This is far from the only one I've found.)
