Virtual Keyboard - using a laptop only

The Virtual Keyboard only maps to 12 keys? I would like to use much more for a virtual keyboard, what's possible as I am only using a laptop.

Another thing that would be good is the option to send keyboard input to the virtual keyboard when it is not in focus.
