Jo, I was thinking if you or anyone of us has some interesting "Setup Templates" similar to the New.MuSession that could be part of the MUTOOLS website and downloaded for beginners.
This could be more practical than a video for basic setups of Audio mono, stereo, multiple etc. or complementary to additional videos.
A collection of Templates in the Zip Package wouldn't hurt I think.

It could develop into a File>Choose Template>Type etc.

What do you think? (Any thoughts from others?)

Would this be more useful? It could potentially be trouble as you can't predict how users have configured their inputs...

A save this project as template feature in the file menu would be pretty neat though (basically just automating a New.Musession save).

Correct. That's why they should be evaluated by Jo before posting.
There is still the possibility for Basic and Advanced Template Files. This would also show to Professional Users a glimpse of Mu.Lab modular power instantly. A plus for marketing.

Here my handling in Driven-Lab (steep by steep). Say me where I am mistaken please?

1) First of all I connect my microphone on my soundcard (Terratec fire6 24/96) and I adjust the parameters of the chart so that announces it audio arrives on the PC. Ok, that functions… I hear the sound.

2) I open Mu-Lab.

3) I open a "new session" and I make a safeguard, immediately.

4) I select track 1 while clicking above. A small green framework appears, around. I suppose that indicates my selection.

5) I do one click right on the button "Record" and selects the option "Setup audio record". The window "Reconding options" opens.

6) In this window: for "Record from", I selected "Audio Input". (I think that this selection indicates that the track must record audio)

7) I click on "Edict" and selected the option "Mic in left" (that to correspond to the options of my soundcard). I click "Ok". The window "Edict" is closed…

8) Of return on the window "Recording option": for selected "Monitor to" I "Audio output" (I also tested with "Master"…). And I click on "Ok".

9) I click on the button "Record Audio", located right before "Record". It becomes red.

Arrived here I should see the led going up and going down to the sound of my voice. But nothing…

10) I click on the button "Record" to launch the recording… The metronome functions, the green bar moves towards the line…

11) I stop the recording. And there… No track was recorded. Therefore, no sound…

Then, where is my error :-)

Yes i agree, it could complicate things.
I would rather like to simplify things.

Anyway, i'll think more of the track target ideas mentioned here, and see whether this could lead to a more 'standard' audio recording solution.

Besides this, maybe a right-click on record audio could have some simple template-kind of functions like "Record Mono From Input 1" and "Record Stereo From Input 1+2". Just an idea. Not sure what default monitoring should be then.

By the way: If it's about personal session templates, then it's just a matter of making a 'Templates' folder somewhere and put your template MuSessions in there. The you can easily choose between your own session templates.

A choose template option would be cool. In the meantime, even a "save this project as default" feature in the file menu (basically just automating a New.Musession save) would be pretty neat and bring template functionality to novice users.

Yes, that's certainly a good idea. Added to the wishlist.

FYI: The green rectangle indicates the GUI focus, cfr http://www.mutools.com/mulab/docs/gui-info.html

Oh, and FYI: you don't need to select a track in order to record.
Audio recording itself is independent from tracks.

If you are monitoring to the audio output, you won't see a level meter going up/down in the racks.

If you want to monitor to a rack, please choose a rack in the 'Monitor To' field.

Anyway, this does not affect the recording itself.

Mmm, strange.

I would also expect a recording at this point, as you did the right thing.
So we'll have to follow the signal path and locate the issue.

But first of all: Are you on OSX or Windows?
If on Windows, are you using ASIO or MME?

Assuming you're on Windows using ASIO, then is that using a specific ASIO driver or the generic Asio4All?

Another question: In EDIT menu -> Audio Setup -> Inputs, are the relevant inputs activated?

You can check this in the Modular session area! , but it is not neccessary

Perhaps it has something to do that the audiofile is not stored?

Yes, the imputs are actived.

Ok, so there must be something wrong somewhere.

Can you please do this:

* New Session
* Right-click the record audio button
* Make sure Record From says "Audio Input"
* Click the Edit button at the right of it and make sure the proper audio inputs are selected, then click OK.
* Set 'Monitor To' to 'MASTER'
* Click OK to close the Record Audio setup panel.

At this point the audio input is connected to the Master rack and so you must see the Master rack's level meter move up/down according to your input.

Can you please do this:

* New Session
* Right-click the record audio button

it works fine for me and it is simple to do...( now comes the recording part that i must perform : will it work or not ? )
This steps you can add to the documentation that there is no misunderstanding for the new user.
Note: add a warning in the documents ( in red ) that in the new session there is no audio track to select, but that Mulabs make a audio track on the fly ( is this a correct expression ?) when you record a audiotrack

The only thing that I made moreover, it is to try to create another track. What resulted in to open a window informing me that : "Mu-Lab free can play up to 4 tracks...".

I clicked on "Maybe later", the window it is closed. But a fifth tracks it is created and named automatically "Audio out".
What made me think that: "Ah can be…"

Following that I have to launch the recording… Then stopped the recording.

And miracle! A recording appears. But impossible to read it. Then I removed a track, with the top. And the reading of the audio track it is made…

But strangest in this history it is that since, that functions normally and simply. I.e. that while following the procedure which I indicated higher: that functions…

Mm… I believe that there it a real change to be made there in the ergonomics and the presentation of the audio recording… ; -)

Good, now I will be able to test all that more in-depth…

MU.LAB already is a great tool, imho, but at the same time it's definitely not yet in its final shape.

Feel free to make suggestions about how to improve MU.LAB.

I think that what misleads, with the first use, it is not to have at least an audio track visible and ready to be recorded when a new session is opened.

MU.LAB does not have audio tracks. All tracks are 'hybrid' i.e. they can contain whatever type of parts.

Hi All,

I have just tried recording my guitar in MU.LAB FREE.

If you set "Monitor" to "Master" when the recording is done it will create the audio part in a new track called "Master" and as this is the fifth track it will be dim as it is above the track limitation of 4.

So what you should do in this case is:

From a new session:

Set the "Monitor" to "Rack 1"

When the audio part is recorded it will appear in the first track.

Hope this makes sense to you all.

This way you will not get the fifth track.
