to get audio-in on Mac you need the in and out to be on the one sound card. You can do this by plugging in a USB sound card, or by making a composite audio device that glues the built-in hardware together.

You can create an 'Aggregate Device' by following the steps in this link..

http://www.thegaragedoor.com/tutorials/agg.html

The link above should solve this issue and allow audio input on the Mac application.

Gentlemen,

Thank you both for your good advice, Peter and Matthew.

Using my Fireface 400 as default input/output, I did actually succeed in getting audio into VFX.

But try as I might, I couldn't pipe audio from my 2 track editor, DSP Quattro, into VFX using an aggregate device with Fireface and Soundflower, since there's no way to assign audio channels in VFX Mac.

So, the only way I can see to use an audio effect in VFX to process recorded audio would be to send it from my other machine using SPDIF into the Fireface and then sending it back to the other computer digitally as well.

A somewhat convoluted workflow…

Thanks again,

Joachim
If it were easy, anybody could do it!

No news about V-Rack?

Just to say my V-machine is a joy to use. I'd read through this entire thread a few times over the past few years, but partly because of the myriad negative comments and partly because I didn't have 549 quid to spare I hadn't bought one. I bought one from feedback.nl for 199euro a couple of months ago as I thought at that price it was well worth a punt.

I'm not exactly sure why there were so many negative comments doing the rounds tbh. Perhaps it was a result of the unfinished software and firmware? All I can say is the current software and firmware is more than manageable. Yes, it sometimes causes my computer to crash, and yes I had a few conflicts with my soundcards when I initially started to set it up, but these things were bearable, especially considering that once you get a plugin onto the v-machine it's an extremely solid piece of kit. And getting vsti's on it is pretty easy once you follow the youtube guides. My absolute favourite feature is being able to assign knobs and faders from your midi keyboard to control elements of the vsti. Literally any action in any vsti can be assigned through the learn function. I use a CME UF6 controller keyboard which has plenty of knobs and faders and I'd consider getting an extra midi controller for thing like synths that would have many more assignable parameters than would be manageable by a keyboard alone.

I would have to say, though, that I haven't tried the V-machine with any real memory intensive vsti's. I have a separate stage piano for piano sounds, and if there were a good quality piano plug in that would be easily managed by the v-machine I'd definitely consider ditching it, but at present that doesn't really appear like a possibility.

I have so much fun playing with my V-machine, twiddling knobs and manipulating the features on plug ins, much more, and more easily, that I would with my DAW. For live playing this thing craps all over a laptop; it's tiny, it takes seconds to power up, it doesn't crash, it's a breeze to change presets and vsti's... Is it perfect? I don't know. But it does exactly what I want it to do, it has a load of supported vsti's and effects, and most of all it's so much fun to play around with. Honestly, it does free you vst's.

Just thought I'd post a positive experience here to counter the many negative ones.

At 200€ I might even get one, to work with my desert island freebies! I have a friend in Netherlands who could send it to me as a gift :D

Post

Aw damn it, my Dutch friend just told me he received an e-mail that they sold out all the 200€ V-Machines. Such is my luck!

Hi,

I've just bought a v-machine.
The desktop vfx library is complaining, after I plug the unit to the PC, that machine's firmware is newer than the desktop software. It's 2.0.20100611 vs 20100505. Tried to find a newer version on the sight without luck.

Am I missing anything here?

Thank you.

My Dutch friend told me that he called the supplier of that store, and can get me a V-Machine at 240€. Seems like I'll be getting one anyways! I hope I won't have any big problems. I'm used to tweaking programs, I just hope it won't crash too much on me. I intend to run freeware VSTi on it anyways.

Hi djangors!

The software is indeed complicated but stick with it - its worth it and straight forward once it makes sense to you...

My firmware was older than the latest from the ~SM Pro website so when I downloaded the software it asked if I wanted to update the firmware also... Have you the latest from the website?

EvilDragon - you'll love it! If it installs and runs your chosen vst it does so rock solid. Some it wont run obviously but what it can it does well!

Do Korg Legacy Collections run on it? I hope they are... I'm not finding them in the wizard file list. I have non-synchrosoft version (C-R).

Mainly this is what I'd run on it:

Synth1
Elektrostudio
TAL stuff
Oatmeal
z3ta+
GSi stuff
OP-X Pro
AlgoMusic StringSynth
AM Music Prosolovst
V-Station
quadraSID
OLGA
SQ8L
Korg Legacy Collections (Analog and Digital)

Post

From my limited experience:

Synth1 - fine but I only get one sound, not figured that out yet.
Oatmeal - couldnt get it to work.
z3ta+ - fine with one bank (you can prolly see a pattern here!).
OP-X Pro - the V-Machine version (without gui) is fine!
SQ8L - beautiful but again only one bank of sounds (cant figure it out yet).

Post

Damn, these bank issues are kind of a deal breaker! Oh well, I'll try to resolve it somehow...

You tried sending bank select/program change messages to it?

Post

Oh no - dont be put off! Im sure its me!

Not tried a thing really - no time but I did consider loading up a couple of the same vst with different banks!

Its prolly me and lack of time yet!

Post

We'll get to the bottom of this, but for now I'm waiting some 2-3 weeks for it to arrive. I won't give up on it that easily!

That is a non released firmware created for testing the next release. It is not compatable with the released software. All VFX software have the firmware built in, just turn the V-MAchine off, hold both LEARN buttons down and turn the power back on. The VFX software will then ask you if you wish to change the firmware with the one that matches the software version.
