been on a vocal formant synth vibe recently - as u do... but i'm finding its quite tricky to get the type of formant sounds i'm after. so far most of my experiments have led to some interesting results, but its not always as controllable as i'd like. most of the time its thru abusing various filter types which arent true formant...

in particular i'd like to be able to modulate the vowel parameter of the vcf module / formant type, but this is only possible via x / y mod. also i'm not convinced by the vowel parameter but maybe my crappy speakers are clouding my ears... as a reference i guess im thinkin of the NORD G1 / G2 vowel sound

it seems the vcf / formant is more of an LP filter combined with some formant filter characteristics rather than a true formant filter per se. AFAIK formant filters usually work like this: the cutoff is the formant shift -/+, and res is the vowel (aeiou)...

so my question is are there any plans for a dedicated formant filter in zebra, preferably with vowel modulation?
am i way off the mark, or are there any interesting workarounds i'm not aware of?

thanks,

j

Works fine here. The 4th circle (left of keyfollow) is the where you choose the modulator for the wowel parameter.

Sounds fine to me. Haven't heard the NM so can't compare the two. Could be the source isn't overtoney (yeah, that's a word) enough for the filter to function as expected.

Yeah, second mod slot works on the vowel.

I've heard some cool results when combining two format filters in series and/or combining with an allpass/phaser filter.

[e] Beaten, twice :hihi:

Formant filter -

* The second assignable knob (i.e. 4th knob over) on the formant filter will target vowel parameter.
* The resonance parameter is sort of a wet/dry. For really strong formant sounds it should be cranked up pretty high.
* Cutoff is like an LP cutoff, for something that matches a conventional formant filter this should be fairly open.

* Another thing that could be done to modulate the vowel parameter is using the mod-matrix. There are a lot of spots to take control of parameters that aren't immediately targetable by modulation.

As you mention there's also room to improvise formant filters from other modules in Zebra :)

yeah i can modulate vowel via "drive" parameter in mod matrix...

thanks
