my newbie question for the week:
I want to add an instance of delay on a single word in the middle of a vocal clip. I tried cutting the clip around the word and adding delay to that clip but dropouts occur - I assume it's too small a clip. Is this something to be done with automation? Automation curves only seem to control parameters for the effect, rather than enabling / disabling. How do I do this?
Secondly, how do I pan each repeat of the delay left and right?

The problem with applying an effect directly to an audio clip is that the effect will end as soon as the clip does, so in the case of a delay effect, the repeats won't continue once the effected clip has ended.
The simplest way would be to set up two tracks. Add a delay effect to the 2nd track, and chop out your word from the first track and drag it to the 2nd (i think shift or ctrl drag will prevent it from losing its horizontal position while you drag?).
(automation is also an option.. but you might need to use a RackFilter to get the effect you're after: set up two parallel audio paths through an RF (both paths entering and leaving through the same stereo in and output terminals), insert a vol/pan filter into one path, immediately followed by the delay effect, then use automation to quickly turn the vol up just before the word you want to effect, and down again after it.)
(do a search on KVR for panning delays, there should be a free one you can pick up that does the job)

i'm a big fan of the old 16th/32/192nd note rushes. sequencers htat i've used in the past have allowed the user to click and drag out a nice, long sequence of notes length-quantized to whatever the resolution you specify, so you might have four quarter notes or sixteen 16ths. tracktion seems to lengthen or shorten new notes when you click and drag - a necessary feature, to be sure, but i prefer the other option.
is this function actually there, but i'm just not seeing it? is it in the works for v2, if it isn't in v1 already?
thanks.

I'm new to Tracktion, so thiese might be explained somewhere, but I can't find it in the help or the archives.
Problem 1:
I have an edit with two tracks: an audio track and a midi track. They are synced just fine. I'm trying to record a third track (an audio track). There's a pause at the beginning of the part. When I record that piece, the clip doesn't start until I start playing. Tracktion then snaps the beginning of that clip to the same point as the beginning of hte others and I have to manually (and often not accurately) synch them by moving the clip. How do I get it to not do that?
Problem 2;
Same starting situation as above: two tracks, one audio, one midi. I'm recording another audio track. I decide I don't like the first take, so I delete the clip and rewind Tracktion to the beginning of the song. I click Record to start recording again, and the play head jumps to where the previously deleted clip ended! No matter how many times I rewind it, it won't start at the beginning of the song.
How can I change this behavior?
Tracktion 1.5.0.246 on Mac OS X 10.3.2
Thanks!
Steven

I have been using tracktion for a few weeks now and I love it. I have a newbie question. With my old Metro 5 software for OS 9 I could record a track with an unbalanced input i.e. left ear only not right. When I would mix those types of tracks together I would automatically generate a balanced stereo file.
Today after I bought tracktion I tried to export for the first time. My final file only had drums in the right ear. My guitar and bass were only on the left ear. How can I get the same results that I did with Metro 5?
Thanks.

A bevy of questions to follow.
I'm intensely new to the whole home studio scene. After poking around, I've bought a new PC laptop and am considering getting an external interface, FruityLoops for creating drum loops and Tracktion for tracking/editing.
1) For the demos of both programs I've just been exporting a drum loop from FL as a .wav and then importing it into Tracktion; is there a way to us FL as a plug-in with Tracktion? And how does functionality differ if I could? (I'm starting to teach myself about audio tech but can't figure out how plug-ins actually work. =P)
2) As far as external interface, I'm interested in something like the Tascam US-122 or M-Audio MobilePre. Anyone with feedback on how either of those two cards work with Tracktion? I've also been poking around recently and just found out about the Mackie/Spike deal ... does anyone have an update on when the Spike is set for release? I probably won't be buying anything until the summer, so I might be able to wait.

you sure can - just be sure to install the fruity vst and vst multi DLLs in a folder that tracktion can access (paths can be set in tracktion's settings pane).
you could also slave fruity loops to tracktion, so you're triggering the sequences you've written in fruity loops (but i think you'll be happier with a piano roll in the long run - the sooner you write in tracktion, the better, imho), but i don't know where that's configured offhand, sorry....

Hello everyone,
I'm new to Tracktion, but tried (and enjoyed) most of its features, so I'm soon going to buy it. However, I have a little stupid question to enhance my workflow :
When editing midi clips (with the piano roll covering most of the screen), is there a quick way to do a 'Move cursor to mouse position' ? With audio clips I just have to click and the cursor jumps heren but with midi clips I have to collapse the track, click somewhere on the clip, and expand it.
I hope you'll understand my question.
Thanks !
Jnv.

Hey Jnv,
Yes I know what you mean and no I haven't found a direct way to navigate the cursor ina MIDI clip. But I'm using a quick and dirty workaround: hit Cmd (Ctrl)-T to create a new empty track right beneath the one you're working on and voila - you got a dedicated area for moving the cursor around at your will
I do think Jules might want to address this in some way in some of the future releases though.

Noob here, I have a few quick midi questions:
1. When I am trying to record midi while looping, whenever it reaches the end of the loop and begins again it cuts off my notes and resets the midi volume (I imagine it resets all midi info but I only hear the volume). Is there some way around this or is it a limitation?
2. When I click the play button, no matter where the cursor (in case I got it wrong I mean the long purple vertical bar that shows what point of the song is being played) is it always skips playing midi notes on the first beat. Example: The cursor is at Bar1 Beat1, when I hit play all notes on beat one are not played. If I loop it the notes are triggered the second time around. How can I get it to play the first notes?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Is there a way to loop the midi clips like in Logic Audio? In Logic you could select the midi clip and press "L" button and it would loop the clip till another clip came by on the same track. If you pressed the "L" again (while the looped clip was selected) it would remove the looping. So in Logic it was like a "virtual looping" and not actual new instances of the same clip.
If this isn't in Tracktion yet, it would definately be a nice addition (for midi & sound clips)

I'm having problems recording with punch-in...
I'm trialing the current web demo version on a PC (comfortably within stated requirements). I'm using it as if it were a multi-track tape recorder -- no midi, no loop or snippet construction.
It seems very nice, except I'm unable to get punch-ins working. It doesn't match up with what the docs say -- they make it sound as if you should simply set the in and out markers, place the cursor at a point prior to the in marker and hit P, implying that it will then record when hitting "in" and shut off automatically when hitting "out". I find that P only arms the punch-in. I have to hit record to get things going, and perhaps I'm doing something wrong there already, as it never shuts off at the end of the punch area.
The next thing that seems wrong -- when it does get to "in" and begin recording, I also hear the original take that I'm attempting to record over.
And after it's tracked through and past the selected area (and I've stopped it manually), I can't work out how to merge my new take into the rest of the wav/clip (removing and replacing the 'bad' take). Or restating... after getting a 'good' take down in the punch area, how do I get rid of the earlier takes and turn the whole thing into a single wav/clip? The more I experiment, the more clip fragments I wind up with.
Thanks.

There have been a couple of threads on this, but some time ago, and nothing since. I'm afraid the default punch in set up isn't too good in T. I was thinking of adding it to the T2 requests, but I imagine Jules is inundated at the moment...
When 'punching in', the part you want to 'record over' doesn't automatically mute, which is a bit annoying. However, You'll find that it becomes very quick to simply cut clips either with shortcut /, or if your using the I O markers, select delete option 'delete clip from markers' (remember not to delete the actual audio file).
Remember that using T is much more flexible than a tape multi track. You've got unlimited tracks, so instead of trying to re-record over a small part of a clip in the same track, it's often better to record again into another track - and do this several times until you get it spot on. you can then cut / paste / drag / render to tidy up.
Not having obvious punch in facilities was annoying for me at first (coming from tape multi tracking rather than another sequencer), but the work arounds soon became just as quick, (and more flexible), so that I'm not screaming out for it any more - although it wouldsave a couple of mouse clicks.
