Grid for drawing waveforms? (suggestions)

I agree. It's always a nice touch to see waveform diagrams or similar in manuals, both the Roland JP-8000 and the microKorg XL manuals are quite good in this regard.

In addition to looking at waveforms for explanations of synth functions, I recommend getting a good spectrograph and watching the spectral domain as you apply various tweaks (a lot of the Zeb Osc FX seem to operate in the spectral domain). Very informative. Perhaps someone in the know could post a tutorial to the osc. fx on youtube? I'd do it, but my computer can't run my DAW and do screen/sound capture in realtime at the same time. That's why I had to resort to 'hi-fi' drawings on paper and my crappy webcam ;)

rexlapin - That's really interesting. I can't imagine how you could sweep from soft to hard sync, as it seems like an either-or thing to me... Obscure synthersizer functions fascinate me for some reason.

This sounds like a really cool OscFX.

Although the diagram is "hi fi" :) it made me realize that a picture would help to explain any of the OscFx (in the manual or in the UI)

Sendy,
I was partially correct about the DCAM synths. Although Strobe has some
interesting sync function using stacking oscillators in which the sync
resets to the setting of the lowest sub-oscillator, it was Cypher which
has what they call variable-depth sync. Here is the information from the
FXpansion website:

"The oscs also feature advanced sync capabilities - Oscs 2 and 3 sync to Osc1 to varying degrees, leading to a range of 'hard' and 'soft' osc-sync sounds."

The manual goes into more detail, but I did not find a link to it.

I find this sort of thing very inspiring as well and really appreciate the
genuis and hard work of developers like Urs and Andy Simper.
Cheers,
Scott

If you create a (free) account on their site you can download the manaul and quick start guide on the right hand side. I downloaded it to read up on velocity glide, beat detune, and voice mod. Interesting modulation sources, the three of them.

Thanks for the info. I was signed into my account when I went
to the site and got the information I posted, but missed that.

Hehe, I'm always reading manuals to gear I don't own. That stuff's like pron to me, lol

Hey, I'm glad I'm not the only one. BTW, here's a link to the
new Galabanum Waveform library. There is a PDF describing
the various types included which might give you some new
ideas: http://galbanum.com/products/architecturewaveforms2010/

Thanks, lol... I bought their single cycle waveform collection (in WAV format) LITERALLY the day before they brought out the next version with 25000 of the things! Since I'm lucky enough to have downloaded the Helix beta for free, I've been loading them into that and bending them around. Some AMAZING sounds that way without a filter in sight!

If Zebra could import exact single cycle waveforms that would be awesome.

Thanks. I'd heard about that, but haven't checked it out yet, so I guess now's as good a time as any.

B.T.W, has anybody ever wondered or wished for 3 osc FX instead of 2? Not sure how difficult it would be to code, but I'm guessing it would only hit the CPU more if it were actually activated at the moment.

Sendy (and others) check out the latest posted betas of Zebra. The Wrap function is now an Osc FX... ;)

Ooh, nice. I've yet to play with it extensively, but try setting up an oscillator that morphs between tri > sqare > saw using geomorph, set wrap to a value (negative is gnarly, positive is smooth) and change the wave knob :-o

Kinda sounds like one part is moving up in pitch and another is moving down, and the crossover point is... ahh, screw it. It just sounds freaky

Nice one Urs :!:

Just tried the wrap function... I made this audio example. 1 Osc no noise module. There is a filter to tame the sound but the sweep is from the wrap oscFX being modulated. Some delay and verb used. It gets a lovely shimmery sound.

(edit: replaced the sound with a better version)

That was your first 'function test' sound? It's beautiful!
