Urs, Any chance of seeing if some/all of the 3rd party patchmakers with banks listed on your site could have some sort of mega-bundle super sale for a much reduced price? or even simply a 'pick 3 from the list for X set price' ? With the banks still between 30-40 USD on average, it is a bit expensive to get more than one..

Zebra^2 is hungry and some of these banks would make it happy :)

Oh well.. Sorry for polluting your forums with my drivel... it was a thought.. probably one that should have stayed in my braindead head.

Hi VitaminD,

Do you not figure that the commercial soundsets are cheap enough? Much work and knowledge of synthesis technique has gone into constructing those sets. Many of them are worth more than the asked price. Some of the programmers are asking more than others, but that is just what they feel it is worth I would imagine. Additionally, it is not wise to splurge and pick-up multiple soundsets at once IMHO. If one figures that much *time and consideration* has gone into building each set, then one can deduce that there is a galaxy of possibilities within those patches and that one might ought to spend a devoted period using and experimenting with one soundset before moving to the next. Limiting oneself in this manner can be quite productive. That is just a tip...not a rule! ;)

Also, keep your EYES on this forum for when new sets are released because most programmers will announce introductory offers on new sets. I've picked up several like this very cheap by watching this forum -- a recommended habit!

One more tip for the road,... Join programmers' mailinglists as well (usually an option on their websites). You could get the announcement direct in your mailbox this way.

I, obviously, do not figure that commercial soundsets are cheap enough. Rather, I feel they are way overpriced. 40 bucks is outrageous for a single set of presets.

If you feel that way that is your opinion. It is not mine though. We have bundle/group buy sales on Sound generators and Effects plugins/sample sets all the time. Do you think their developers didn't create these through much work and knowledge of synthesis technique? Yet they can put their products on sale at great discount.

Most of the sets I'd consider interesting are already released and have been for some time. What a great way to reinvigorate sales and interest of their other products by putting one of their patch banks for sale at a big discount. It works for software developers.. no reason it can't work for sound developers too.

When I can get a 100-200 dollar synth for 40-50 bucks.. what is the purpose of buying the 30-40 dollar patch set for the synth I already have? I'll get another sound generator AND it will come bundled with presets for a couple of dollars more. Think about that.

Maybe another POV is that a new soundbank is just like having a new synth

But its far less expensive, you dont have to install it, authorise it, learn a new synth, aso aso.

Then you can also benefit of an -hopefully- more or less completely new vision of your own synth, therefore enhancing your knowledge, perception, and final use of it.

I would be very happy if more people choose to go deeper in the use of their synhths. Sometimes buying some new units wont bring you too much, or Id prefer to say less than using existing one in a more advanced and conscious way.

Of course you might also consider that I'm completely biased when saying that

Absolutely. However, at this point the general price of a patch set is WAY WAY overpriced to me. I'm sure I'm not alone.. actually from the last big thread on preset bank prices I KNOW I'm not alone..

Whats better.. getting 20 dollars from me.. or getting 0 dollars? I think thats the bottom line. Is it worth it to you as a developer to release it for less for a short time or keep the price inflated continually? A group buy with some/all of the patch sets listed on the u-he site would be a great draw I think.. even if its 40 dollars for 3 sets... in the end you're still making money you otherwise would not.

Either way.. I'll continue to patch my own sounds.. until the prices come down to or below the magical $20 USD for 128 patches mark. :)
