MU.LAB: What's next

Zynewave Podium. Few times FL Studio when I need midi plugins inside Podium. Very few times Sonar LE 8.5, when I bored

To be honest I tried the demo of M3 a couple of months ago. I liked the fact it was modular. But when I remembered that it doesn't have ghost notes to have a reference I felt... well... without fingers I think that its only way to manage drums parts is with piano roll, it hasn't any dedicated drum roll / step sequencer, right?

I'd like that Jo dedicates more effort to the sequencer instead plugins, because most of veteran users have our own complete plugin set.

Btw, if you are not using MuLab then it will be difficult for you to know the hidden amazing features that many of the DAWs out there are lacking.

I like those hosts that puts the features in-your-face (without overload the screen or using looooooooong menus), and you hasn't to do any effort to look for them

If this can be of any help to you, Mu.Lab has one of the best HotKey system for you to have those feature at the (real) finger tip.
For almost, if not all, the commands you cab program a Hotkey for it.
This is better than those looooooooong menus and also keeps the interface very much free from all those options. I can't stand those toolbar that look like a Chinese restaurant menu

Try the hotkeys while working and see how much they really help with the workflow. Faster then the pointing mouse to the options.

If this can be of any help to you, Mu.Lab has one of the best HotKey system for you to have those feature at the (real) finger tip.

Even better than that, the shortcut system supports MIDI. I have a setup where I do multiple takes without even having to turn away from my MIDI keyboard. Awesome!

Kyodeejay -- what do you mean by ghost notes? If you mean in the normal sense of very quiet notes, of course you can do that. Either play them quietly, or double click on the part you're interested in and manually adjust the velocity of the notes in the lane below the piano roll.

I think he meant that he would like to see in the note editor other sequencers (Parts) notes in the background while composing new notes in the foreground as in Podium.
For some users it's important to see them as a reference while creating drums and bass patterns etc.

Yes, that's all I want. I cannot remember some complex note sequences ("question") and the only way to write "answer" melodies is with ghost notes.

I know what you mean. It makes it easy to build up patterns etc. but at the same time I don't know how you manage to have an easier life with Podium compared with the profound simplicity and work flow of MuLab.

Don't give up on this side of the planet. Keep checking the next wave of MuLab upgrades leading to version 4!
You may find the tipping factor....

To be honest I didn't spend enough time testing MULAB, so I cannot say too much. The reason I didn't spend the time were:

- Lack of ghost notes (I'm totally a zero without that)
- No easy drum mode (an step sequencer like FL Studio or drum roll like Podium)
- No multicore, and with a poor cpu like mine (Centrino Duo T2500) I cannot do too much in the moment I use few plugins like Decimort or Toraverb or Drumazon.

And a minor details - I like full screen mode in Podium and its colors schemes.

Those are the reasons why I stick with Podium and I didn't tried Mulab too much. When mulab has those I'll test it and I'll compare with Podium, then I choose the right host for me

It's absolute the same with me...

I love the basic idea with it's modular approach and the MUX of MULAB and try over and over again...but there are really some basic and really usefull features I miss in MULAB...

I understand the developers point to keep MULAB as simple as it can be, but the lack of drum maps/mode , ghost notes, multicore support, an easy to use browser as well for presets as for files are major showstoppers for me at the moment...

But I see a big potential in MULAB, so I am looking forward to new versions...

Perhaps can mutools tell us a little bit of current state of a new version ???

It is no browser in my understanding, it's a popuplist with browsing features

Serious, what I mean is, it is at least for me easier to work with a browser, which can stay open, like FL Studio, Podium, EnergyXT or Reaper have...with drag n drop capabilities, "direct sending" (shall mean,e.g. preview mode by clicking on a preset is sent to the matching plugin or plugin in focus...)

An example (a very important for me): If I choose using MULAB, I want as well use the internal plugins like building a drumsampler in MUX... In my workflow, I am used to step through many different drumsampels while playing a loop and there is where MULAB is starting to be to complicated (perhaps I am using it the wrong way)...

I have to open the GUI of the Sample Player Module, I have to click on the sample text field to open up the file browser, choose the file and doubleclick or hit ok... to choose the next sound again click on the text field, choose open, doubleclick the next one and so on and so on and so on...very very very complicated ending up with a very very long list of before loaded samples...

In e.g. FL Studio: Set focus to the plugin you want the sample to be sent to, sent first sample to this plugin by rightclick: Send to selected plugin...

Play the loop, set focus to the browser, hold shift button all the time and hit arrow down for next sample or arrow up for previous sample and everytime a sample is sent to this plugin...hit...sent, hit...sent...
Easier it cannot be...in the same time, I can preview about 50 times more samples than in MULAB...50 times more and if you preview a lot of samples this is a really major major showstopper...


Next thing: I personally prefer to have a list open and see the next 20-30 items while browsing instead of pressing "blind" on arrow buttons in the GUI and be surprised, which preset/sample comes next...it's a little feature, but gives me a better feeling, dunno why...

And for "stay open browser" it doesn't matter, if this is an floating window, which stays on top or if it is docked to the bottom/left/right...but again, a pop up list is no file browser...it is more long-winded to use...

1. Arpeggiator, with random generation as well as chordal control.

2. In the MUX ...
- re-sampler or bit depth changer for distortion and re-sampling.
- tempo sync that can be used for LFO control

But i guess you mean you don't want to use the popup list because of what you told above, and then when using the more instant Previous/Next buttons, then in that case it's too 'blind' for you. Do i understand right?

That's correct...
While the list is open, clicking on a preset closes it and you have to reopen again...
Perhaps I would like better:

single click: loads the preset temporary, that you can listen to it, but the browser stays open and

doubleclick/ OK or Cancel: to confirm or go back...

Same with samples...

For me, this would be more comfortable, especially by working with drumsamples...


BTW, a big thx to your logical editor...I had last night a situation, where I had to delete about 2500 "ghost notes" out of a midi file...I didn't got it to work, but now I got it right...a big time saver and a step ahead against your direct competitors in price range...
