hello people,

I just recieved my new midi controller - akai mpk49.

When I use zebra with my DAW... the default settings with the akai controller seems a bit weird. for example, the modwheel seems to be pre-mapped to the mod wheel... when I try the midi unlearn fonction, it doesn't seem to work with the modwheel.

what is the best way to map-unmap things to zebra. I would like to create some sort of "preset" on my controller to be able to control things like x and y. but especially start by reseting the default stuff, like I explained with the mod wheel.

thanks for your help everyone.

arbx.

just read my post, it's all confused. sorry.

the modwheel is pre-mapped to the cutoff of VCF1.

the midi unlearn actually works.

so... if I map things to the X and Ys will it be permanent... imagine if I open a new project with a new zebra instance ?!

What host are you using? I'd guess most hosts can do something nice along these lines, I wouldn't know what that is other than for Ableton though.

[e] Oh, I've seen Kore2 player recommended for this kind of thing too - I think it's free, might be worth looking at.

You could make a Live template with a mapped version of zebra, save it and use that as your default template.

For Ableton, the easiest thing is 'instant mapping', IMO. Dunno if any of this is new/useful to you, but:

Pros: you won't really have to deal with any MIDI-mapping confusion.
Cons: .... not many, there are a very few specific cases where MIDI-mapping can be a little more immediately flexible, but in truth you could just use both methods for those cases.

For specifics on setting that up, 'Instant mapping' is in the Live manual's index, or else I'm sure the specifics for any particular piece of gear are described somewhere on the internet if there's any special instructions. Pretty sure recent Akai stuff is supported, so it should be mostly painless.

Basically this won't directly MIDI-map Zebra, but it will let you interact with parameters for *any* device in Live. For any 3rd party plugs, it's the first 'configured' parameters. For instrument racks, the 8 knobs are controlled remotely. With Zebra you could configure the device's XYs to be the first parameters, and tweak the Zebra device directly. You could also map XYs to an instrument and control that.

Here's a screenshot that might clarify:

Some things to note:

* The blue hand on the titlebar of Zebra means it's the active device for instant mapping. I.e. the knobs on your controller are mapped to the parameters of this device.

* You could also map the 8 XYs to the 8 instrument rack knobs ... I find the rack pictured pretty useful, there's room left to map any particular XYs or some effects or whatever if called for.

* The 'configure' button on the rack is used to specify which parameters Live lists for Zebra, and in which order. XYs are great right here since you can just map what you want to the XYs in Zebra, rather than 'configuring' each time you want to set up some mapping.

* After creating a rack like this, you can save it in the Ableton library or anywhere you'd want. This is pretty essential - if you 'configure' Zebra it won't retain that configuration unless it's racked.

Hope this was useful, let me know if there's anything unclear. I feel like this is a really *fast* workflow that lets me focus on more interesting stuff, but surely everyone works a little differently.

thnks everyone for the suggestions / tips.

will try all of that... when I get back home later today.
