Liqh~Aquarius Ghostbusters-Cover mashup...I don't really hear the Aquarius theme presented so well. Confusingly '80's sounding, which seems to be a common thread in many of this month's entries.

Thanks for the all the thoughful reviews, I agree with you about 90%,
The theme was :
"You are asked to create a Movie Theme..."

Any genre, it didn't mention Hollywood or anything else. So your take on how
it should be carried out is your own interpretation.

Actually stated as it was one could have been presenting anything or as extreme even pure silence.
Since there are movies with no soundtrack at all.

Said what was, common sense makes us thinking that Scoops meant a fairly commercial movie.
Therefore some kind of melodic theme was required. But even a sound FX "theme" as rachmiel
could be the recognizable mark for a movie, ever seen Stalker or Forbidden Planet?

About my entry I wrote "an episode of the Ghostbuster series", so the main theme is that.
The Aquarius people are meant to be the ghosts themselves. <wink>

Today (in Europe, where it's technically a new day already, at least :p) I'm 25 years old. :p

Thanks for the reviews, all. But I must admit, I really disagree with Sleek Month here. :p
For reference, I played some casual game that is entirely a chase/running away scene (called Canabalt) with my theme as a backing. Now whenever I hear my theme song, I can see that unknown character running away from the apocalypse occurring behind him. And I truly believe it qualifies as a leitmotif, and in my view, the main theme music of a film should be a leitmotif.
I really don't understand how you couldn't find a "clear melodic theme", I don't see how my piece can be anything but that.
Lastly, wouldn't the part where you say it sounds more like "background music" support the theme's qualifications as a leitmotif? Unless you view it as an idiosyncratic piece of background music that would be shoved anywhere, without relation to anything else in the soundtrack. :s

Sorry, I'm usually not that thin-skinned about the criticism, but you're not saying you didn't like it (difference in taste and all), you're saying I failed the challenge.

shirkant~cherry- Dude, it's mastering compressor time.You don't gotta crush your track, but I couldn't tell this was even playing after the other tracks. An odd little tune with an interesting soundset.

My inspiration came from that old french silent movie Happy Anniversary (1962 oscar winner)An excellent example of movie music where the characters get identified through the music.The leitmotif keeps repeating at well structured slots/moments.Music plays an extremely important role of the narrator without making its presence felt overwhelmingly. Hollywood has destroyed the fine art of movie music with heavy orchestration.(IMHO) Mine was an idea for a short film. As you rightly said it is a sound set. For later evolution and development of these bits into longer appropriate versions in consultation/collaboration with the "client"

I really don't understand how you couldn't find a "clear melodic theme", I don't see how my piece can be anything but that.

It sounds like some arpeggios without a "lead" line in the beginning, then when the strings come in, the line is so understated that after several listenings, I still could not remember it.

Let's use something that sounds like your piece as example:



It starts very similar, with arpeggiated piano, but then around :26, a well definted lead line kicks in.

Your piece is kind of the same, but with no lead line. Backing without a "voice".

Well, you described it as such (background music) yourself. I'm thinking a movie's theme, as opposed to a character's theme or whatever, is a "trademark" piece of music that DOES draw attention to itself and functions without action behind it, like over a credit sequence or setup shot.

I am not saying leitmotif itself makes something a "theme", but I am saying that FOR ME, a theme necessarily has a strong melodic hook stated succinctly, a defining motif that personifies the film you are about to see, a statement of both intent and purpose.

This theme can and usually is brought back in different permutations throughout the film, but typically is never stated as strongly as it is when first introduced.

...as has been said, ANYTHING can be a theme, but when people think of a movie's theme, they really don't start thinking of the electronic tonalities from Forbidden Planet, (Bastard! I got drawn into watching the whole movie again by your post! ), they think the big ones with strong melodic signatures. Batman. Star Wars. The Bond films (which includes the pop songs, so I don't want anybody coming back with:"You only like big quasi romantic orchestral stuff!"). Saturday Night Fever. The godfather. MASH. Jaws. 2001. Star Trek.

...and, if I was hiring somebody to score a film, that's what I would be hoping for.

Yes, you COULD hook a cart to a Tiger, but when you say "beast of burden", that isn't what people think of.
