ZPC #13 - Plucked
NOTE: In order to track the number of downloads this will be hosted on Box.net until voting is over, rather than the U-He patch library (where it will be after voting). If this is a problem for anyone, please feel free to post, pm, send me an e-mail or anything - I'll be watching as closely as I can.
There's a strong focus on guitar or guitar-like sounds here, ranging from naturalistic to sweet/synthy to surreal. As always thanks to submitters for some great sounds!
---
If you didn't submit a patch:
Please feel free to use the poll voting. Poll votes are one point. You're welcome to submit a 1st / 2nd / 3rd as well, but not obligated.
Patch authors:
Please post your (numbered) first, second, and third place selections from this set in this thread. First place translates into 3 points for the patch, 2nd : 2 points, 3rd: 1 point.
You may also submit a poll vote - whether it's an extra point for a stellar patch or creating some sort of tie vote, please feel free to do so.
If you entered, you must vote, and please do not vote for yourself!
Results will be tabulated one week from the date of this post, when the poll stops running. Most points wins, and best of luck to all the entrants!

I'd suggest listening to the "untouched" folder at this time, as there are some apparent problems related to some of the presets in the "Balanced" folder, that if you compare them it will become obvious.
It's possible this may be changed soon though.

Something very strange happened when I first listened to these patches: it seemed like they all sounded somewhat the same, as if the settings of one carried over to the others, which I know should be impossible. I'm not sure if it was a Zebra problem. a host problem, or a temporary inability to distinguish reality from fantasy... Closing the host, reloading Zebra and trying the patches a second time seemed to cure whatever happened.

One issue was a patch where the volume balancing didn't satisfy the author - I'd always defer to the author there.
Another issue was XY pucks out of position on a patch - had some forgotten XY automation which was snapshoten by Zebra.
These settings have been changed in the set that's being hosted.

Some good stuff in here!
1. Soft Blue+ (I like it best with XY1 in upper right quadrant and XY2 in upper left)
2. Pluck Me I'm Famous (In the lower octaves, sounds like a great blues upright. There is some sort of weird latency issue for me though.)
3. Something Plucked+ (I like the range of tones you can get from the four pads.)
I noticed only one of the patches omitted a comb filter (Something Plucked+). I'll have to explore the various comb setups in detail later.

1) Something Plucked+ - Unique and familiar at the same time. Reminds me of a lost ancient instrument that probably never was but should have been.
2) Pluck Me I'm Famous - Subtle and rich. A pleasing pluck indeed.
3) Feeder+ - Starts simple and then moves into an unexpected weirdness. Fiddling with the X/Y pads brings even more oddity.

1. Something Plucked - liked that it didn't try to emulate something obvious
2. Gloom Guitar - those XY pads can do some crazy awesome things!
3. Soft Blue - just a nice warm sound made me smile.

Awesome! I didn't even enter this time and possibly got more votes than usual.xh3rv wrote:In addition to the winners, we have much gratitude for submissions from these folks:

(It looks like these are misattributed.)

Congrats to all!
I joined this contest because it's a creative way of exploring Zebra's capabilities which I don't always have time to do in my regular work. In fact I've learned more about Zebra in the last two ZPC's than I have in the last year of ownership, including lots of stuff not in the manual...
Another really cool thing is that I get to see how other people approach similar contexts, which also demonstrates Zebra's flexibility. It's sad there aren't more people involved in this but I guess there aren't that many people interested in raw sound design since there are enough preset providers to satisfy most needs. Were the past ZPC's more popular?
As for future ZPC's, I personally like the idea of focusing on a particular aspect of Zebra. This last "Pluck/Comb" was a real eye opener and I discovered a few tricks along the way that didn't make it to my submission. In fact I feel I just scratched the surface of what's possible with that. It might be interesting to have ZPC's that force contestants to find creative ways of using a limited subset of modules, although focusing by sound type has its merits as well.
A big thanks to xh3rv for managing this contest. Again, I wish it were more popular because there's a lot to be gained by it for all involved.
