should ACE be taking up so much CPU?

hi, i'm running ableton live 8.2 on a quad-core pc with 4gb ram in windows 7.
when i have only one instance of ACE in my DAW (no other plugins on), some of the polyphonic patches will make my CPU meter exceed 200% if i'm playing more than one note. i've seen video demonstrations of people going through the same patches on the same DAW (ableton live) and the sounds don't seem to cause CPU overloads for them. my computer is pretty fast compared to anything else out there so i don't know what the problem is for me?

What speed are the cores? One instance of ACE can only use one CPU core (blame Intel, although it's not an unreasonable thing for them to do - IIRC each core has some independent resources that can't be synched in a way that would allow multi-core computation seamlessly; I don't think anyone does it differently).
Also worth noting - the CPU meter on Ableton is a little tricky in that it only reports the busiest core, so in your setup you may have 3 cores free (although this doesn't really help you with running a very hungry ACE patch).

to use other cores, you can make 2 tracks and put an instance of ACE of each with the same preset and split the keyboard so some notes you play are on one instance and others are on the other instance.
this is a bit tricky to get the notes split and kinda constrains ones playing but it does work. Mostly what I do is play and record with ACE on standard, then render to audio on accurate to avoid CPU issues...
I mostly use multiple instances in one rack to get more polyphony rather than cpu cause on standard setting and multiple voices of 3, ACE has a max polyphony of a meager 5 notes... unfortunately, Live uses only 1 cpu per 1 rack
and yes, ACE uses lots of CPU and that is normal

I don't think that it should be that high.
Do you have other applications running at the same time, that would take up extra cpu?(ie; internet browser, virus protection)
Are you playing chords with many notes at the time the cpu spikes are high?
4 notes or more, and my cpu usage goes too high also, using certain poly patches.
Check your Process Manager, to see if any background applications are using too much memory or cpu.
Some virus protection software, does periodic scanning, and at times can interfere with other apps.
Maybe say which preset, and how many notes played at the same time, so we can see if it's the same amount of cpu on our end, using Live.
Did you try it in any other daw?
Try it in Savi Host to see if it's the same.

i don't have any other programs open and even if i did, it wouldn't even matter because the windows task manager only shows the CPU usage at around 20% when the DAW is overloading past 100%.
i'd say more than half of the polyphonic patches will overload/glitch at some point if i'm playing anything that requires multiple notes. for example, if i select the "hs austria 2" patch from the local folder, the cpu meter in ableton will jump to around 130% the moment i play a triad on the keyboard.

Here's HS Austria 2 on my machine running Reaper 3.71 (32-bit) on Windows 7 64-bit. ACE is version 1.0, 32-bit VSTi.

I changed the quality setting to accurate and played several chords in succession. I topped out at around 10% utilization.
My CPU is an AMD Phenom II 1090T 3.2Ghz. There may be an interaction problem going on with Live or your CPU.

It could be a driver problem... Maybe try asio4all in comparison to the asio driver for your soundcard.
