Using GigaStudio samples on Receptor 1

I just wanted to report a success. Like many of you, I have a stack of GigaStudio sample CD's and no GigaStudio support. Since my Receptor 1 Pro has all the horsepower to run the older GigaStudio samples, I thought that it would be fun to see if I could use them again. Well, it turns out that the good folks at Soundlib have a solution. They have a Windows plugin (G-Player) that plays GigaStudio samples natively without conversion. This is a big deal because most conversion processes do not work well (try Kontakt's sometime!). You can check out the G-Player here: http://www.soundlib.com/gplayer/

The recipe for getting it to work on Receptor is pretty simple. It is an unsupported plugin install with a registry edit. Start by installing the software on your Windows computer. Run regedit in Windows and find the GPlayer entries. Go on to Receptor and run the Receptor regedit. Duplicate EXACTLY the strings you find in the Windows registry into the Receptor's registry. I think you might have to modify paths, but be sure all the "magic" numbers are duplicated exactly. Then go ahead and create the directories for the unsupported plugin install on Receptor, copy in the dll files and run the utility to refresh the plugins. You should then see GPlayer and GSolo. Load up a GigaStudio sample and Rock! Easy.

Great news. Did you manage to store patches with .gig files and use multiple instances in a snapshot?

Hi fewarren,

I've been having good luck lately using native installers for vsti's by running them directly on the receptor (eg. putting the installer.exe files in the "Drop Installers Here" folder, and initiating an unsupported install on the Setup tab). Typically, the installers set all of the registry settings, so you don't have to copy them.

I wonder if this would work for gplayer?

I've tried the latest version of G-Player (2.0.3.1) on Receptor 2 and it works great. Installation is as easy as it gets. Just drop the dll in the unsupported plugins folder, hit install and you're done (wish they all worked this way). All you have to do then is put your serial in when you start the plugin the first time. No registry edit needed or use of the installer. G-Player and G-Solo work fine. You can save your G-Player arrangement modifications and recall them. I doubt you can load plugins within the program as you would on your desktop but not a big deal since you can do that in Receptor mixer anyways. Use all those Giga libraries that never sounded quite right converted into another format.

CORRECTION: I tried it on Receptor 1 and it installs ok AND you have to input the registry entry from your desktop install for the current user registry. I didn't see it at first but it is under software\g-player. You'll be able to input your reg code when you start g-player but it won't retain it the next time you start it. I guess it can't write to the registry under Receptor 1 but can for Receptor 2. So the only way to properly register it is to edit the registry using the Receptor 1 RegEdit utility. After that you are good to go with version 2 of G-Player. Works great. I never liked the giga translations under Kontakt plus G-Player is lighter on resources than Kontakt.

Hello,

I found this old forum post about G-player (Using GigaStudio samples on Receptor 1). I have one question: are the patches working on your receptor? Can you switch bank and g-player will automatic load gig samples without clicking in GUI to load samples? It is not working on my Receptor 1 rev. C...

Thank you very much
