Megh--

I spent, over the past 2 months, about $2,750 on stuff for the studio. I "promised" myself that I would stop buying stuff---then my studio monitors went POOF!!

Sometimes I think the equipment gangs up on me wallet---- :help: :x

See, that's exactly that kind of situations I was thinking about when I said in my previous post that for musicians and studio owners to buy new gear is almost as certain as death and taxes!
To promise not buy more gear is the same as saying you're giving up sometime in the future... and that is Abomination, I say!!! :x :D
I went around for decades carrying my old FZ-1 sampler and using it mainly as a MIDI keyboard in the last years of it's life -- the disk drive stopped working, some keys lost their sensitivity, it was repaired countless times until it reached a point where it was repaired only to start failing again as soon as I turned it on at home... at last the repair technician had to tell me that it was too old to keep repairing it... Then I bought the Novation Remote SL61 and now the FZ-1 is gathering dust in the "museum" section of my studio (hey, it's synth section still works! :) )
On the other hand, my trusty Roland Axis-1, (my 1st MIDI keyboard and much older than the FZ-1) still works! -- hence my screen name Axis1~SL61, wich means from Roland Axis-1 to Novation SL61 (and counting), the "~" representing the countless gear acquired in between... :D

er... keep on rocking (despite all obstacles  ) :band2:

hmmm.. well, in the last 6 weeks I've bought a PRS guitar, a Yamaha 4 string bass, a 6 string fretless bass, a 12 piece dual brain edrum kit and a rare Jen Piano; not to mention enough mics to record a 7 piece acoustic drumkit, a couple of decent large diaphragm condensers & a few dynamics, with stands & leads for all of them.

I promise that I will not buy any more gear

tomorrow.

Oh far too young, maybe in another 6 years Duncan? Then you can super crazy on everything that you have ever desired  ing the prospect of that. Congratulations by the way/many happy returns man

IIRC you are mainly a drummer anyway whom dabbles in DSP (well dabbles rather well) and a big fan of prog (probably alot more besides). Therefore the above are easily explained items really in my book (if i had that sort of money!). Especially in these one man band type of sitations and/or upgrading studio equipment/backline/source instruments...etc. So i (as always) was just pulling your leg :)

May we have some pics when they are all setup kind sir? :hyper:

Peace and all the best

Dean

Still waiting on the "anti" GAS  Unfortunately, it has to be timed a bit more perfectly but I've probably got a few goodies coming. Anyone in the states need cubase 5 (oops!) ?

hibidy - i am ill at the moment my friend and have not been able to try the POD HD :( So can you give me some of your thoughts on it if you would? Not that i will base my opinion on that but it will cheer a man flu patient up (even if you hated it/did not like it): Spill yer guts :)

Cheers dude

Cram as much gear into your last year as a youth. Next year's birthday make the solemn oath on your mascot/familiar/lucky amulet that the time of acquisition is over, and it's time for some serious solitary fun.

I remember back when I was even poorer than I am today and it was all I could do to afford a new synth/recording magazine once a month - read it in awe at the new technological marvels appearing and wonder if I could ever afford such things before getting a knot in my stomach for each new advertisement, review and preview.

Then later after the angsty pangs subsided would I turn on my Tascam Four Track cassette, my casio cz101, casio sk1 (crappy 8bit sampling keys), Roland sh101, and assorted stompboxes, and determine to make my setup sound like a bloody Fairlight cmi Mk iii or bust, because to me it really was the equivalent.

Only it was actually better: 1) it was mine, 2) I knew how to use it 3) I scrimped and saved hard for every 'module'.

It was arranged on the floor to maximise access to everything (and also because I couldn't afford a desk - waste of money when you're drooling over the picture of a Matrix 12 and trying to conserve energy to imagine what it must sound like from the specs alone)

Anyway, I might've been poor, but I was the happiest nutcase on the block.

Each sound and rhythm on the later Kate Bush albums, Zoolook, you name it (all taped off the radio) - I lovingly found a way to emulate, and thence twist it into my own sense of what music might be.

Kept me going for years.

Sold the keyboards to buy a windows 95 capable computer, gave away some things I didn't think were really necessary (Korg ddm110, Alesis Midiverb) now I had Cakewalk Express and the Roland vsc 55 and a strange little two osc softsynth that I wish I had a copy of now

It wasn't a vst - you changed the virtual parameters with a gui like a neat purpose built subtractive no frills, and then rendered to wave, changed a few pitches in cooledit, triggered them in Cakewalk...

Fast forward to today and kvr and how far we've come, and would I swap it all for a Fairlight?

How'd you like to be cured in less than five minutes?

Go to the kitchen, slice three medium cloves of garlic, spread some butter on toast.

One glass of water to wash it down if it gets too hot.

Take four minutes to eat it.

Works for me everytime.

NEKRO.MACHINE wrote:Yeah the big alien spine thing? Gieger designed the art for the alien films amongst other stuff :) All the 'Cyber Mech' style tattoo is based around his art also. The only bands that i can think of who have used his work for album art of the top of my head are 'Carcass' on 'Heartwork' and 'Celtic Frost' on 'Monothiest'. Ibanez also did some limited edition models with Geiger's art work on them, of which i did own the RG model (which i sold due to it being heavy and getting more than i paid for it!). He is a total legend but also (of course) an oddball for sure!

Edit: Google pics of them: http://www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&ex ... 47&bih=600

Edit 2: Google pics of the type of tats i am trying to explain: http://www.google.co.uk/images?um=1&hl= ... =&gs_rfai=
What about Parmeson, Ache and Llama's fold out cover?

Cheers for the tip to cure the cold and also very much for more regarding HR.Giger blueghost :tu: (I obviously expected there to be more but did not know who)

All the best
