Hi
Im currently learning to create orignal sounds on sylenth1 and it would be nice to have the square wave available since several books are using it in their examples.. i cant find this anywhere one sylenth1, does this synth come with a square wave and if it doesnt (i have read the user manual too but didnt find it there either), then can someone give some help on how to create it?

Don't know what you're smoking because it most certainly has a square wave.

Simply click on the waveform display in the oscillator section, and drag the mouse upwards (or downwards, depending on the selected waveform). One of them is a square wave. It's called a 'pulse' wave in sylenth.

thanks for your answer ViktorW, i didnt know it was called a pulse-wave in sylenth1.
im pretty new to this music stuff (although i do have some connections and have listed to and attended alot of trance events), i started to learn about music and music production just under 2 months ago and then i didnt even know what an octave or chord was, so please. during that time i have read quite a bit so im still a rookie but learning every day. in the books i have, for example the dance music manual the author is refering to both a pulse wave and square wave, i guess he is using the words interchangebly.

FYI a pulse is basically a waveform which goes up and down in (nearly) straight vertical lines. If it is symmetrical then it is a square wave.
So a square wave is a symmetrical pulse, but very often pulses are non-symmetrical or have their symmetry modulated (pulse width modulation) which is why it is more useful in a synth that has this ability to call them pulses because they are not always square waves but they are always pulses, see?
Edit: Apparently Sylenth doesn't have PWM so I dunno why they are called that in that particular synth, maybe they're a bit 'skew-whiff'
Edit 2: I found out thanks to Jupiter 8 they are indeed a bit skew-whiff (or at least some of them are) so it does make sense, phew!

was there any reason to answer like that he asked a simple question.some people...jupiter8 wrote:Don't know what you're smoking because it most certainly has a square wave.

Hi exceed26, here is an interesting little read about the pulse and square waves and pulse width modulation

No band limits, aliasing is the noise of freedom!

How could he not see it ? He claimed to have read the manual so he must know how to change the waveshape of the oscillators. Just change them and there voila is a squarewave. You must have been smoking some wacky tobacco to miss it. I didn't even know they had names,i just changed the wave until it was a square. There's pictures of them you know.Dj Troy wrote:was there any reason to answer like that he asked a simple question.some people...jupiter8 wrote:Don't know what you're smoking because it most certainly has a square wave.

Only problem with that is Sylenth doesn't do PWM, you can fake it though by a saw and an inverted saw and adjust the phase between them.Nielzie wrote:Hi exceed26, here is an interesting little read about the pulse and square waves and pulse width modulation

lol, so actually Sylenth should have probably called it a Square all along.jupiter8 wrote:Only problem with that is Sylenth doesn't do PWM, you can fake it though by a saw and an inverted saw and adjust the phase between them.Nielzie wrote:Hi exceed26, here is an interesting little read about the pulse and square waves and pulse width modulation

It does have some fixed width pulse waves, you just can't modulate the pulse width.gdev1981 wrote:Yeah! lolSendy wrote:lol, so actually Sylenth should have probably called it a Square all along.jupiter8 wrote:Only problem with that is Sylenth doesn't do PWM, you can fake it though by a saw and an inverted saw and adjust the phase between them.Nielzie wrote:Hi exceed26, here is an interesting little read about the pulse and square waves and pulse width modulation

oh! So it does make sense to call them pulses at least!jupiter8 wrote:It does have some fixed width pulse waves, you just can't modulate the pulse width.gdev1981 wrote:Yeah! lolSendy wrote:lol, so actually Sylenth should have probably called it a Square all along.jupiter8 wrote:Only problem with that is Sylenth doesn't do PWM, you can fake it though by a saw and an inverted saw and adjust the phase between them.Nielzie wrote:Hi exceed26, here is an interesting little read about the pulse and square waves and pulse width modulation

Yeah,square wave is just a special case of a pulse wave.gdev1981 wrote:oh!
