thanks for the link and the answers.
jupiter: of course i have change the waves several times and know their names etc. since i dont have much knowledge about waveforms i didnt realize or know that a square wave was a modified pulse wave. i think i will have a read-up on pulses and more on waveforms in general.

weird that it doesnt do pulse-width modulation (especially like said earlier in the thread, when they call the square wave for a pulse wave) when it does so much else and so many people find the synth very good

In your defense i did not know you could see the names of the waveforms. I just changed them 'til a square wave popped up and thought you were high or something. It's right there,a picture of a square wave.

There's probably a good technical explanation why that is the case. Could be orders of magnitude harder to implement alias free and since you can fake it with saw waves, why not? It should be the same thing. Now i just saw a thread were someone complained it sounds different but i suspect he's not doing it right.

There is one different which is DC offset IE it is high much longer than it is low (or vice versa) which could affect the sound if you use distortions as such but it is just another flavor,not exactly wrong in a technical sense though normally one tries to avoid DC offset because it eats headroom. If it is a lot to take in don't worry about it,either read up on it on Wikipedia or just ask,ill be here all day,don't forget to tip your waiter. Or just ignore it for the time being,one can only learn so much in one sitting.

why is using two saws "faking" pwm? FWIW, to me that IS pwm. i have no clue what exactly goes on inside digital and analog oscs anyways, so as long as it sounds right...

What if you want to modulate the pulse width with an envelope ? Or just go from 25 % to 75 % pulse width ? And you have a problem with DC using 2 saws.

But if you just want a slow pulse width modulation it is pretty much the same thing as regular pwm though the DC offset could potentially sound different if subjected to non linearities.

Simply modulate the phase of one saw with an LFO.

No, there is no DC offset. A saw has no DC. The sum of two signals without DC will have no DC either.

However, a signal that does PWM with fixed upper (+1) and lower (-1) values DOES introduce a DC offset that varies between +1 and -1. Just try and filter out the DC component of such signal using a highpass filter. You'll notice that the resulting signal is the same as the sum of two (inverted) saws. Having a DC offset in your sound can cause numerous problems, so its generally a bad idea to implement PWM like that.
