These books look really interesting! Recently I am moving towards tools for learning so these look really useful; any opinions which to buy first as my local library does not have them?

You can take the same order for studying them as i has written above.
First you need to know the basic things : what are scales, chords , intervals and so on and than you can look at the book for harmonies what is dealing with chords, chords progressions in more depth.
Than composing ...for making music in Mulab
Other interesting books are the idiots guides series

These books are rather expensive with a cd included, so you can use first a torrent to get a idea of the content

Does the Music_Theory_for Computer Musicians "exercises and examples" display more piano roll or staff notation?

As i can see in this Music_Theory_for Computer Musicians "exercises and examples" it is focussed on pianoroll notation.
The author of this books realizes this that a pianoroll editor is common practice

But it is necessary to understand also the staff notation, because not all books about composing are focussed on only the piano roll editor.
So theory is explained with the staff notation.. and you can(try) translate this to a pianoroll editor

You might aspect that, because there are a lot of programs ( MUlab, Chaotic synth, Fruity loops, Project5, Orion , ....) what only have a pianoroll editor
For me i like more the combination of a staff notation( score editor)+ pianoroll editor, but the practice is that a lot music programs for composing don't have a score editor.

That is a complicated thing (a score editor)to program into the music software like Mulab

Ps : you can use "bittorrent" to find some music information

Well to bring in notes into a staff or pianoroll editor easy than you have both worlds

Once you understand the C major scale reflected on your piano keyboard keys..the tone(key) distances between them ..half steps (1/2) tone or whole steps (1) tone.
If you know the scale formula for C major : (2 1/2)( 3 1/2) in words two and half three and half: it means a sequenze of 1,1,1/2,1,1,1,1/2 steps than you know also for every given chord type what follows from the given major C scale(key) the chord formula's built on each key of the piano keyboard.

So let say you start on a c key end ends a octave higher again on a c key
c->d =1 step d->e = 1 step e->f = 1/2 step ... ( 11(1/2)111(1/2) )

This approach you can use for every scale
If you want to build a major key on the d-key of your keybord than you use the c major formula with the step distances

It basis stuff what is in the lessons

There is a tool that I have been considering called Chordspace Playa [ http://www.chordspace.com/ ], you choose the chord and then every melody note you play is in the correct scale.

Is this info in the books or is this a useful tool ?

Yes you can deduce this
As mentioned earlier the C major scale has a formula and the type of the triads chords ( have also a formula ) are fixed on the keynumber of the pianokeyboard

keynumber 1 major triad
2 minor
3 minor
4 major
5 major
6 minor
7 diminished?

So say if you play a augmented triad chord on the C major scale that is not a triad what is belonging to this scale.

I thought this feature i have also seen on real keyboards with accompiant

jan
The software must be programmed this way .. i will look to the software how it works

Hello James

Can you install this VSTI in MUlab ?

Post

I do have the feeling that Chord playa install is similar with the catanya vst plugin
You must use midi yoke( see post from Johnny pumphandle )? to get this vst working

I hope some day there will be be a midi recorder in Mulab made to instal this type of vst easily
