So, last night I came across these excellent plugins, and one in particular caught my eye, the Audio to CC plugin. I have been looking into ways to use the Alesis Air Synth and FX units as midi controllers, and it seemed as if it would do the trick, but no dice. Currently running OSX 10.6.4 on Live 8.2...I have seen some posting about this VST on the Ableton forum, and have consulted this short video:
but no dice...any tips on what I might be doing wrong? Is there another plugin from this set I should also be using?
Thank you so much!

the video shows basically how to do it, if you look in the right place... the main thing is how the tracks are set up. you need one track with only midiAudioToCC on it, which will receive the audio. then you need a midi track which receives midi from midiAudioToCC. this track can then be sent to an IAC port, which you also enable as a "Remote" input in Live. that way you can use the generated midi to automate knobs. also, you probably have to set monitoring to "In" on both tracks.
hope this helps.
i once made a similar plugin too, that sends midi to an external port by itself, so you don't need the extra track... i haven't kept it updated, but it probably still works. that's here, for mac and windows:

hope this helps.

Got it! Pretty interesting results, actually.
In your experience, is the plugin prone to frequently causing crashes? Live did not want to play nice with it, which is sad because it would more or less solve my problem without modifying my gear. I also noticed that having it in a set caused serious audio distortion.
Still, great little plugin there. If nothing else, it gives me further incentive to try adding midi control to these devices.

it's possible that it has bugs, but i can't test it on the mac right now... you probably want to mute the audio output of midiAudioToCC if you're not doing so already. might help also to turn the Rate way down, otherwise it sends a whole lot of midi data.
unfortunately i don't know of any similar software for the mac, though i'm sure it could be done with Max for Live.

I figured out about muting the audio output, although I am still getting the audio out of my monitors. I think part of my problem is that the Air units don't have volume control, and any audio output is slaved to a KP3 and mixer volume. To compensate, I had to turn the rate way up. I have a new interface on the way now that will hopefully alleviate those issues to some degree. I've been wrapping my head around M4L, having only used other people's programs, and I think that ideally I will have to try putting a MIDI effect together in it to do this.
