Hi All!

A challenge!

Does anyone know how to make that strange ever-evolving sound in Royksopp - Vision One

It starts at 44 sec

It sounds like a short percussive sound looped extremely quickly (move the right loop point to the left on any tiny sample and this will happen) so it creates a low noise and then ran through a slowly moving formant filter or something like that.

In fact, at 1:47 it slows down until it's just a little "blip" then it starts up again.

Would love to see how it's made and if anyone can do it (here comes the compliment) the Urs Heckmann fans can.

not sure you could do it in a conventional synth, prob easest to actually use a sampler, one that lest you autmate the loop length...alchemy maybe or kontakt?

You can see it here:

Interesting with that Stevie Wonder, "Too High" groove. Nice.

There have been a few threads on this one in the past: I reckon, personally, they used a sample of the Stevie Wonder bassline and fed it to a vocoder. But it's possible to simulate it with a synth that allows some degree of waveshaping: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 32#3946632

Sounds like granular synthesis through a bunch of filters to me, but that's pretty obvious. It's a really striking sound.

Sounds like a reese bass with a big notch filter and Uhbik-F on top?

I think I might know - and you are on the right track.

Get a kick drum.
Put it into a sampler
Loop it
On a separate midi channel play a simple saw wave at C2.
back to the loop -
Pull in the end of the loop till you hear a similar sound to what Royksopp has and then match it to the C2 on your saw wave.
You now have a looped kick that is tuned and you can play a "tune" with it.
Duplicate this channel.
Throw a comb filter on one of these channels and a formant on the other
Throw some dirty distortion and a notch to get rid of the mid frequencies just below 1k on the output of these 2 channels
tweak the filter cutoffs and the distortion eq till you have the sound you desire.

Hope this helps.

I think chuna's suggestion sounds good.
I have once done a Guiro sound in Largo.
That works with a looped (blip/ping) envelope on volume, which gives an env shape close to chuna's bass drum. I leave the osc settings to you, but i run it through a bandpass with some reso. Modulate the env times and the filter and you can change timing and colour of that sound.

A quick check with ACE: the ramp env can loop and should be able to bring you in the right ballpark.

chuna and AndreasD thanks for that - makes sense - ill give it a go and let you know how i get on!!

Maybe this isn't very helpful, but I was working on some sound effects and found that digital noise gives you weird creaking tones when you modulate filter 1 (pitch).

When I heard that bass line, it reminded me of it.

Here is what it sounds like:

And here is the preset if you want to look at it:

Yup, thought that as well. You'd be surprised actually, someone had a demo song in the FL 3 install that used a VERY similar bass, and it was done with 3Xosc and a couple of FX. (I actually had a chat with him about it and said it was inspired by some Alicia Keys track and it was called a rubber ducky bass). More than that... I'm clueless :hihi:

You guys are waaaay over-complicating this. This is a saw through distortion with a phaser(?) on top. I have somewhere (at least I think I still have it) almost exactly the same patch with Ohmicide and sylenth with a single saw played really low.

Anyway, load a single saw wave in any synth (ace, zebra, sylenth) and send it through Ohmicide and go through the 'bass' presets and you'll come close already. Then just tweak to taste. Maybe add a little noise in the synth also.

I'll try to look up if I still have that project saved. Couldn't find it right now but I got shitload of projects.

Here's a very quick test I did and it sounds close already: http://www.box.net/shared/ado1zcj0zm

I just played through the notes because I don't know what key that track is in. 1 saw, Ohmicide default patch, 4th preset button on the upper row. But I imagine they spent a little more time than I did :)
