Hello,

Is it possible to play other tunings than the standard 12 tones equal temperament (12t-ET)?

By example, playing a 16t-ET, or any other scale.
Reading the Scala files format (.scl or .tun) would be wonderful
:)

Hiya...

I'm having it in the back of my mind, but it has got quite low priority :D

First of all, check out this thread (click) and then I'm also trying to gain speed with G4/G5 Altivec Code.

If you have any pointers to the Scala stuff (so that I finally understand how it works, unlike what they had on their website some months ago...), I'd appreciate if you posted them here (or send me a mail) :)

Cheers,

;) Urs

Hello Urs,

Thanks for your fast reply!
Ok, I understand it's not a priority

I'll bring to you the most I'm able to find about the Scala tune tables.

Just for info (no contest!), Cube & Tera from VirSyn are using this system:
<http://virsyn.com>

I wrote at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/16tone/> about the Microtuner application:

Scala & .tun files are directly usable.
The workaround with these two multi-part softs is the following:
Before launching the app or the plug, each tuning file (up to 8 for Cube, 16 for Tera) have just to be renamed "part1.scl, "part2.scl",... "part16.scl" in their Tuning folders.
I tested with a same sound for the 8 parts/midi channels of Cube, and from
Microtuner, one scale transposed on 8 different midi notes to play the sound on a 6 octaves range, or so. By the way, any scale is hear-able from very low to high frequencies just by 'part-changing'.

See you soon.

I just discover Zoyd. I love it

Hi Urs,

Some good news about the 'tun' format.

Anamark releases the source code for their .tun file reading. Their C++ code looks good and usable.

Hope that helps!

Hello,
As a soft synth user I think implementing alternate tunings into a soft synth is unchartered territory and a way for that particular soft synth to stand out from the others. I teach several electronic music classes at a college and many students are looking for new sounds/new ways to make to sounds and alt tunings can do this. The only thing I really show students at the moment is the Max Magic Microtuner on the mac.... it would great to demo some soft synths....

Hiya,

Phil, I've checked the stuff and it looks indeed easy.

I don't know how soon I can do it (upcomming version or the one thereafter), but I'll build it into Zebra!

(Currently I'm adding one Oscillator, more Waveforms and some more Filters to it, which keeps me quite busy :D )

Cheers,

;) Urs

Great news Urs, thank you so much
I'll be an happy purchaser of Zebra! :violin:

You can take a look at ChonoX v2 from LinPlug: each instance can be played with tuning files.
Cube and Tera from Virsyn too.

Just an additional thought about the GUI integration of this feature:
Ala LinPlug CronoX 2, just clicking somewhere in the GUI to load a scale (tun/scl) at any time, from any user folder, is the best.
With the ability to set each instance with its own scale.
Displaying the name of the loaded scale is also an important UI feature. (CronoX displays the name in the 'rear panel' of the plug. In the front panel would be really appropriate and much more useful!)

Hehe, no prob...

Zebra 1.5 has a preferences folder in the presets location (currently for spectrum presets and several settings). There'll be a "tunings" subfolder into which you can throw your .tun files.

The names of the .tun files will pop up in a drop down menue on "Settings" pane (which already is kinda populated with the preferences now), and you will be able to save the tuning for the instance in the song, or along with the preset, whatever you prefer.

Furtherly, I'm thinking of making different tunings available for each of the up to 4 Oscillators in Zebra 1.5...

... but well, I havn't started on this, so it's all open.

There's still too much to do until Musikmesse, so I can still not say if this will be in 1.5 or not.

Cheers,

;) Urs

Hmm... throwing alias of tun files could work?

In one word: perfect! :)

I remember such features in some hard-synth. Terrific! I can't imagine what incredible sounds we'll get by pitching 4 oscillos with tun files!
I think it's also possible with filters... :nutter:

No prob Urs, I'm not hurried.
Not yet
