My Receptor 2 PRO MAX Upgrade (from Rev. C Receptor 1) Is Glitchy And Unreliable.

I shipped my Receptor, Rev. C KOMPLETE back to Muse back in January of this year to have the unit upgraded to a Receptor 2 PRO MAX KOMPLETE.
It runs Omnisphere, VB3, and Pianoteq beautifully;that is, when I can get the machine to boot up on the first try, and when it doesn't mysteriously 'freeze up' in use - necessitating a re-boot. I've been trying to set the Receptor up for live use, and know that I'm not overtaxing the system in the least.

One thing the Receptor does, about half the time, is stay in 'initiating' mode upon power up. As per tech. support as Muse, I emailed the 'log' from my Receptor 2 to them; they could find no particular problem that would cause my powering up issue. So, what I've essentially resigned myself to is the fact that my particular Receptor will take at least two attempts every time I power it up. Not the sort of thing you want in a several thousand dollar instrument...

The other issue is that, during use, the unit will sometimes 'freeze up', i.e. - it stays stuck in a particular Program or Multi. The only solution I have found for that is to re-power the unit - which often results in the first problem, again.

In talking to several fellow Receptor owners, I've discovered that those who have upgraded Receptor 1's have similar problems, while those who have purchased brand new, Receptor 2 units have basically seamless operation. If there is something else I haven't yet done for my 'Receptor 2' - that will help it operate seamlessly - I'd appreciate some insight into that. I've tested the power in my workspace; it's fine. I've used this Receptor in Uniwire mode when sequencing/recording, connected via USB, connected via MIDI; also it's been used with three different controller keyboards. The problems I've noted occur under each of those different circumstances.

My goal is to use my Receptor for live performance. I've taken a MacBook on stage several times; while that's currently a more reliable solution, it's risky. As the Receptor is designed for live use, and I also have quite a bit of $$$$ invested in it, I'd like it to be able to do its' job - in the same manner as the other reliable keyboards/modules in my rig. As I have basically the same software instruments in my studio computer, and laptop, the Receptor is a redundancy for me to keep for home studio use only.

The last time I called Muse Research for support, I was told of the new 'fee' structure for tech support. The instance for which I called was professionally handled, and resolved to my satisfaction (a VB3 'issue'). But, the additional checks I performed on the unit - while on the phone with the tech - did not ultimately solve the core issues that plague this particular Receptor. This unit has cost me a lot of $$$$, time, and grief; I don't feel I should have to pay to get this unit to work properly. Plus I wonder if this unit is truly reparable. I'd hate to have to pay to ship it back for repair, then have problems when it returns - especially if there are core issues with Rev. C Receptors that have been upgraded to Receptor 2 PRO MAX status.

Has anyone else here had similar difficulties with an upgraded Receptor ? At this point, I already have the Receptor up on CL for sale; perhaps a studio can make use of it, then I could pick up a MacBrook Pro and rack mount that for live use. I don't like going that route, as the Receptor is optimized for live performance, but the Receptor I have is basically useless to me for live work. Often, I wish I'd sold my Receptor 1, and just invested in a brand, new Receptor 2.

Journeyman,

I am sorry to hear that you are not happy with the upgrade. We want to make sure you get the help you need to get the Receptor running properly. From what it sounds like the issues you are having should be able to be prevented. I know you said that you have contacted us in the past but I am not sure what your Plugorama user name is.

Can you post a ticket number(s) so we can check and see what the problem was? This way we can see where we left off. These ticket numbers can only be accessed by the Muse support team.

Thank you,
Gary

I upgraded my revC to a R II Pro (not Max) about a year ago with excellent results - much more stability, no other issues. I think your unit has a problem that Muse should be able to resolve. Good luck.[/quote]

I'd guess that it is caused by faulty memory or a faulty power supply. I don't know how good you are with PC hardware, but you can try to remove one of the memory modules (I presume that two are in your Receptor) and see if stability improves. Touch ground before touching the memory to prevent ESD damage.

Best regards,

Fedde

I too did the upgrade from receptor rev C with Komplete installed. It is now twice in a year that we have had to send this unit back to Muse Research. The first time the hard drive (solid state 500Gb) was faulty and the most recent time it was "bad RAM" according to tech support. We just got the unit back about a week ago and already the unit has crashed on me once. very buggy and unreliable in my opinion. I tour a lot with these units and I'm at the end of my tether with them. We use 3 of them in my keyboard rig (2 receptor 1s and the upgraded unit I am speaking of) and I have lost faith in them. When I get the chance I am going to switch over to my Macbook Pro mainstage 2 rig. I have been hearing a lot of folks saying they are running mainstage 2 seamlessly with 2 controllers.

I've had my Receptor 2 (upgraded from a 1) for well over a year. I have had no problems. It has been reliable at home and on gigs.

I had my Rev.B upgraded to a 2+ Pro earlier this year and it's been rock solid, no problems at all. Hope you can get the upgrade properly fixed soon!!
