Best of DX7 sounds banks?

Just pay attention to my problem list. This is the only synth that I actually bought three of before I got the one I wanted. I returned the first, sold the second to a friend, and kept the third; it was that important to me to get a mint one. I rejected multiple units for months before I finally got the one I wanted. I love it, but then again, it really was the SY-99 (I know, different synth, but still Yammy) that 'got' me into synthesis in the first place.

Just take the original Yamaha banks ( Tx and Dx ) and you're done.

There are no gazillions Dx presets on the internet, its just a myth. Almost all ( 99,90% ) are duplicates or personal selection and rearrangements of the Yamaha original banks.

I have 77 banks of DX7 patches. That's like almost 5000 patches at 64 patches per bank, if I recall? Personally, I can't stand them, but they are with my collection of SY-77 patches, which I adore.

I got an SY-77 in 2004, paid around 200 Euros second hand. Used it for some months and sold it because i was in my "new synth every week" stage at 2004/2005. Maybe in the future i'll get a SY-77 again. BTW i got a Motif ES 7 since 2005 now (with 512 MB Sample RAM and a 4 GB USB flash drive).
Anyway i got NI FM8 from Komplete 6 to do some FM sounds at the moment. The FM ("analog FM") in the Blofeld or Dune is a bit limited but nice too.

Yeah still have a TG-77 (loaded with tons of personal presets ), as well as a Dx7IID and even a TX-802 in my racks

I'd recommand anyone to check Himalyas presets for the TG/Sy series. Very good stuff which will save you tons of hours, as everyone knows that these old venerable units arent the most friendly to program ( Though when you spend some days on it you could almost program it blind )

There's a cheap TX7 module at Ebay now. Maybe i'll pick it up just for fun. For programming i could use Emagic Sounddiver for example.

Is there another dedicated DX7 editor which works with Windows 7 32-bit?

Beware of the TX7 : In my souvenirs it has a terrible noisy output. The S/R is really bad. Some people say that it adds a more consistent and interesting low end boost to basses and punchy patches, but well for me its still noise

Bingo. I had the DX board for my ES Rack as well. I sold it, as the price was close enough to having a TG-77, but had a fraction of the features.

Why so many units? The first one had a bad output, and the power supply whined so loud that I could hear it outside of my studio. The second one the screen was much dimmer than I was led to believe (it looked like a toy with the battery 95% dead), and the buttons weren't aligned and didn't always trigger when pressed. The third one, aside from a few scratches, was perfect. This is by far my most favorite Yamaha synth, so it was very important to me to get one in great condition. They are huge and heavy beasts for the TG-77. It's by far my heaviest rack synth I've ever owned or worked with, and I've gone through quite a lot.

While, I agree it's not JV-2080/XV-5080 'easy', it's significantly better than the FS1R by a mile. That display isn't too bad for programming... provided your backlight works.

Price going up and up. I decided to stay with NI FM8. More features, easier to program and better sound. I just found that the Waveform + Spectrum window is very helpful for programming since you could directly see the influence of the parameters.
