I can't seem to get the bank/program change to work with ACE. I put my fav patches into the MIDI Programs folder--into sub banks names Bank 1, Bank 2, etc.

In Ableton clip view I've tried different combinations of Bank, Sub-bank (what is that?), and Program numbers in an empty clip (no MIDI notes)--I put them in the Notes section of the clip view. I trigger the clip, and watch to see if ACE changes patches. It doesn't.

I did follow the manual, rebooted, relaunched.

What's the trick?

I don't know if this is relevant, but the "junk" tags don't make the junk patches disappear in the folders. It used to work, now it doesn't.

I didn't do anything different with the file locations. I think I installed everything as default. I can travel to the patch lists and see the folders.

Or is there an entirely different way to change ACE patches from Ableton?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Has this ever happend to you? You post a question to a forum, and immediately after hitting Submit you get one more idea to try? And it answers your questions.

I got Ableton to do bank/patches changes in ACE. The trick is that Ableton adds 1 to each bank number. So Bank 1 invokes the patches in the "root" of MIDI Programs in ACE. Bank 2 invokes the first sub folder, etc.

The "sub-bank" parameter in the Abletone clip view does absolutely nothing. Ignore it.

The program numbers call up patches in the list within the folder, in order. (Tip: number your patch names because the list is always alphabetical.)

Sub folders are taken in order, and not treated as sub folders. For example, if you had Bank 1, Sub Bank 1.1, Bank 2 you would address Bank 2 in Ableton as Bank 4! It's the fourth folder, including the root.

One of the reasons I couldn't get it to work before is that I had track monitor set to In. It needs to be Auto. (duh!)

I hope this helps future people with the same question.

I don't know what Live does, but ACE recognizes standard MIDI Program Changes and Bank Select (MIDI CC#0). Maybe Live thinks it has to send presets by itself or something? Does it actually send plain MIDI Program Changes?

I remember this issue coming up quite often, and always in connection with Live. It may be a setup problem.
