Freqanalyst Multi - (1) Audio files only ? (2) Frequency overlap

I am new to the above software and testing the Demo version.

I am correct in saying that only audio files can be exhibited by this software so that for example if I have a bass line for which the sound source is a VSTi e.g. Halion the only way I can display in the multi is to Export it into an audio file (in Cubase SX) and display that. There is no other workaround.

Also I have a bass and a kick which show up on the multi as very close traces - almost overlapping. As my primary aim is to avoid two instruments clogging the same frequency - and say I want the bass to be a sub-bass then I would for example increase the decibels for the bass on frequencies 40 to 80 Hz (using parametric EQ) and reduce the decibels for the kick in the same region and then,finally, get the balance right by ear using a straightforward volume control.

1/ The exact answer probably depends on your host application, but usually you can monitor a VSTi as well: just insert our plug-in after the virtual instrument in the effects chain and it should be able to analyze the signal at the output of the instrument.

2/ Yes that's a good way to handle that. Another way is to use a multiband compressor to dynamically adjust the gain of the overlapping frequencies.

Yes,I realized that with a VSTi there are channels created (in Cubase SX) which are virtually audio and to which you can apply processing as if it were audio. I had not known this before.

Question 1
Can you keep the Multi window on screen while adjusting another plug in. For example if you want to see what effect say a parametric EQ is having on a wave form you can insert the EQ in a multi "sandwich" i.e. put the multi in the first slot, the parametric EQ in the second and the multi again in the third and then set the first multi to (say) instant calling it before EQ and the second multi to instant calling it after EQ. You can then see what different settings of the EQ do - fantastic - but each time you alter the EQ (by clicking its edit button etc) it takes the Multi window off screen. It would be very handy to keep it on to make these comparisons instead of having to remount it each time.

Question 2
If you set the multi to show a peak reading it does not appear to re-set when you stop the track and then play the note a second time. In other words how can you be sure that the peak you are looking at is the very latest one.

I am a customer, too.

A1. Almost all of DAWs could display plugin's windows always on top.
For example, Cubase4/5 etc.
I don't know about CubaseSX, probably it might do so, too.

In case of Cubase4/5

A2. I have 3 ideas.
1)Please click the button of peak-reset before the playback.
2)Using MIDI CC. (MIDI Track --> peak-reset)
3)Adjusting the control of envelope-peak-reset.

There is indeed a way in Cubase SX, as far as I remember, to display the plug-in window "always on top". I think you need to click on the top left of the window. It will bring the window menu, and there is an option here that you can select in order to keep the window on top.

The peak reset function will indeed let you make sure you have the latest peak.
