Colin Bennett wrote:What a truly awful first experience with PPG Wave v3

I'm running Live 8 on a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.5. I keep my system in perfect shape and haven't had a single technical problem - well that was until I tried to demo PPG Wave v3.

The installer failed on every instal attempt.

Never had a single problem with any install ever but there's a first eh. Gave up after about 8 attempts and resorted to doing a force-install using a mac app called Pacifist. This worked fine.

Then installed the demo license on my eLicenser dongle. Worked fine.

Finally launched Live and inserted an instance of PPG Wave v3. Played a note and it worked fine. Went to the browse window to choose a preset and as soon as I clicked on any preset everything froze. Completely locked down with a spinning beachball of death. Had to force quit live. Tried again and again and again and gave up.

Just deleted every last trace of the install and back to a perfect working Live 8 with every plug-in working great as usual.

What a nightmare. I was soo looking forward to demo this!

Did you contact Waldorf support already? That's mostly better than if i post issues somewhere at the beta forum.
Did you use v1.0 or the new v1.0.1 for the install? The new version is here:

If Waldorf are aware of the issues they shouldn't be allowing potential customers to download buggy demos. Absolutely shocking stuff. I don't use VSTs in Live, only Audio Units. I'm certainly going to give this a miss for the foreseeable future as this kind of dodgy coding leaves a bad taste in my mouth. :(
There is nothing like a special "demo version" AFAIK, only the license is different. That's one of the benefits of the eLicenser protection. BTW installing the latest eLicenser version really helps sometimes:

BTW i got no problems with the full version at Windows 7 (PPg 3.V v1.0.1) and Ableton Live 8.2.1. Currently i'm doing my next soundbank on it and i have to admit that the sound of PPG Wave 3.v has some kind of "special magic" to it. I have imported several samples i've created and in the PPG they sound better than ever. The FX section, especially the Chorus and Reverb are awesome. Sometimes i also get drastic changes if e.g. i only change the True PPG mode from 2.3 to 2.2 mode.

Thanks Ingonator. I downloaded the demo from the page that followed the demo license form. I think it was the v1.00 but I'll definitely try thus 1.01 update when I get home from work today. Was so disappointed yesterday with all the crashes and installer fails.

I'll report back tonight.

Thanks,
Colin

I had the same problem on my machine with the latest Snow Leopard installed :(

Same with the new version 1.0.1?

The link is in one of my last posts at this page.

If this doesn't work please contact Waldorf support at support@waldorfmusic.de
If more people report the same problem it's likely that it gets high priority.

I'm not sure what version it was but I will try again with the newest version and if it doesn't work I will contact Waldorf support.

Thanks Ingo

That crash when you're browsing presets in Ableton Live (with audio unit version) is fixed in 1.0.1 version .. Though now I experience crashes when closing / opening the gui
circuit modeling and 0-dfb filters are cool

Post

Finally got a chance to try the 1.0.1 update tonight. Installer still failed so I force installed again with Pacifist. Glad to report the crashes have stopped on patch selection but every now and again when I close the plugin and try to re-open it, Live freezes and I have to force quit. I can't quite reproduce this every time but it happens probably once in every 8 or so opens and closes.

Sorry Waldorf but I'm done. :(

[EDIT] Just realised the previous poster seems to have the same issue. Nuts!

Post

Why no x64 bit version of PPG3? The 32 bridge is unstable for work.

Post

Yah Colin it seems its the same problem, I will write Waldorf about it I'm sure they fix it soon. Btw. I still bought the plug-in, I just love the sound .. Hope the remaining problems get ironed out. Btw other thing is that compared to 1.0 the patch changing using the arrows that used to crash is kind of sluggish
circuit modeling and 0-dfb filters are cool

Waldorf is famous for releasing buggy software. They'll have most of it sorted out in a few revisions.

In the case of PPg Wave 3.V it depends on which OS you use. On windows 7 32-bit and Ableton Live 8.2.1 it works perfectly for me. The Mac VST version seems to be OK too.
Same about Largo, some of the issues which are posted here and on other forums like e.g. the host sync of the Arp could not be reproduced in the Windows version.

Not to forget the Blofeld. Some people seem to be "whining" about issues but i made a whole soundbank on it (check my signature for it) without any crashes or weird behavior. I even used a free 3rd party editor all the time without crashes.

What i want to say is that it's stupid to say that all Waldorf products are buggy since either those "bugs" are difficult to reproduce or could only be found in certain OS and/or DAWs. During the Betatest i found how good (and fast) Wolfram Franke from Waldorf is at fixing bugs and problems. If there are remaining bugs they are either hard to reproduce, difficult to solve or Wolfram just didn't have enough time at the moment.
Anyway those problems will be solved sooner or later but ONLY if some people report those issues directly to Waldorf, e.g. with sending an email to support@waldorfmusic.de
Even if Wolfram Franke is a member of KVR now he only checks the threads here rarely. The fastest way is to contact Waldorf directly. Personally i normally contact Wolfram directly but that's another story. :)

I'm sorry if this post sounds a bit harsh but i wanted to say this for a longer time now...

Unfortunately it's not. The 1.0 mac vst worked fine but this GUI crash problem happens also in vst version now with 1.0.1. That said, it seems all the problems with this plug-in on Mac seem to be related to Ableton Live, in Logic everything works more or less fine.

Thanks for that information, it seems to be helpful. :)

I hope this will be fixed soon. I'm in the beta team too but i have no access to a Mac at the moment so i could not check it myself.

Not harsh at all. You basicly said "thay dont have bugs except for..."
You only mentioned their newest products. What about the Microwave , the Q , the Wave , the "waldorf edition" trilogy ? All had(or still have)bugs.

I do really like their products (except the matrix style UI's) and the guys clearly have a lot of talent as their synths are usually great sounding and fairly complex (features wise), but that doesnt change the fact that they release stuff with bugs that are dealbreakers for some people and sometimes never fixed.
