have you checked that your Bonjour-Service is active? Some people
disable all kinds of services to "optimize" their PCs for DAW-stuff.
Also you should take a look at your firewall. If you use the
standard XP / Vista / W7 firewall, both Bonjour and rtpMIDI
will open up the necessary ports automatically.
If you have a firewall from a 3rd party vendor that might not be
the case. In this case you need to configure your firewall
manually.
For Bonjour that means that UDP-Port 5353 must be open (otherwise the
mDNS multicast-packets cannot be received and therefore no services
announced by Bonjour will be visible on your PC)
For the actual MIDI-connection, you will need to open up two further
ports. On the right hand sight of the rtpMIDI-configuration-GUI
you find the base-port that is used for the communication.
Since Apple-MIDI uses two consecutive ports, you need to open up
the port you see in the rtpMIDI-config and the next one as well
(so if 5006 is displayed there, you need to open up UDP 5006 & 5007)
Best regards,
Tobias

Bonjour is running. I'm using Win7 and the built in firewall. The ipad does not show up in rtpmidi. Have tried disabling the firewall to no avail. Have forwarded the ports on my router.

You really don't need to disable the integrated W7 firewall sincethe dj wrote:Bonjour is running. I'm using Win7 and the built in firewall. The ipad does not show up in rtpmidi. Have tried disabling the firewall to no avail. Have forwarded the ports on my router.
both Bonjour and rtpMIDI open up the necessary ports on this one
by themselves.
Opening up ports on the router makes no sense either - this is
just if you want people from the internet to connect to your
rtpMIDI-session.
To check whether any bonjour stuff works, you could just download
my Bonjour-browser: http://www.tobias-erichsen.de/enumBonjour.html
If you run this, you can see if there is any Bonjour-stuff on your
network at all...
Best regards,
Tobias
PS.: Do you have any other WiFi-MIDI apps on your iPad? So you could
test if this is a problem with the app itself...

Thanks for the replies, your bonjour browser is mac only, no? I'm on a windows laptop.
I do have other wifi apps, Touchable and Griid and have both of those working well.

Well, i decided to give this another go, this morning rtpmidi can see my ipad. Who knows why, nothing is different. Only thing i can't change is the live routings in rtpmidi, those don't show anything. Live is getting a midi signal as i can see the midi indicator flashing when i press a pad......

Live routings can only be changed when the session is not active.the dj wrote:Well, i decided to give this another go, this morning rtpmidi can see my ipad. Who knows why, nothing is different. But you only need the live-routings if you want to use rtpMIDI
as a gateway between a remote network peer and a local hardware
MIDI interface (so the remote party can use your hardware MIDI
interface like it was connected to their local PC / Mac)

Ok thanks. I did get things working and triggered a few drums. However, when i assigned the pads to other things like triggering scenes it caused Ableton to lock up. I'm going to give it another go this afternoon.
Is this where you would like to discuss these things or would you prefer it by email?

Never had any problems with Ableton on Windows when using my rtpMIDI-driverthe dj wrote:Ok thanks. I did get things working and triggered a few drums. together with my midipad app and the python-script I developed - and this uses some heavy midi-traffic - hopefully no loops were created (Ableton sending stuff to the app which returns the stuff, which is returned by Ableton again...)
Tobias
PS.: It really makes no difference to me, but I would suppose that from this point on it is more a topic for either Ableton or the author of your app...

Hey Olja,
it's submitted to the store. If nothing goes wrong, expect it next week.
Thanks for the link. Seems I haven't made enough posts so KVR just cuts URLs in the middle.
