cant get audio to record from the line in on my comp

brand new to this stuff , but i can record the synth that came with mu and my vst plugins as audio and as events, but when i try and record from the line in (my drum machine) i get nothing .i went into the record audio set up and choose audio in and then click on edit next to audio in and it shows the left(mono) and right audio inputs ,when i click it says none and doesnt give me any options. its kinda bumming me out at this point .. any one ???

'edit' menu >
'audio setup' menu item >
'select inputs' button >
make sure desired inputs are checked so they show as available in the 'recording options' window

record audio is what i want to do ..i can and have recorded audio from the synthia that came with the program.. its when i try and record from the line in on my comp,(drum machine, hard synth ).
digit thats exactly where and what i clicked on ..i have no inputs to select from according to mulab.. when i click it it says none and gives me no other options as far as selecting one

in that same screen, what type of audio driver is active? asio or mme? do you have an asio driver? if not, search for and install 'asio4all' and then set your options

funny you mentioned that driver as it was downloading..thanks for your spot on advice...i had a feeling that the mme was junking up everything .. the hardware was an electribe ea1 mk2 and my alesis sr18 drum machine.. thanks again for all your help
