Han Zimmer's Inception soundtrack was announced this morning as an Oscar nominee for "Best Score".

Thought this forum in particular might enjoy the bit of good news!

Nominations:
BEST SCORE
127 Hours, A.R. Rahman
How to Train Your Dragon, John Powell
Inception, Hans Zimmer
The King's Speech, Alexandre Desplat
The Social Network, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

I was glad to see that, too.

Wasn't on the Golden Globes list was it?

My personal list would have replaced Daft Punk for Tron: Legacy for How to Train Your Dragon.

I hope Hans Zimmer wins the award, Inception's soundtrack is absolutely amazing.

It's his 8th nomination and he was IMHO unfairly omitted for prior usage of Zebra. This Zebrafest should win!

(I don't believe he'll show up though :hihi: )

It was, and then they awarded best soundtrack to... The Social Network.

Yeah, WTF?? :bang:

I mean, I have nothing against Trent Reznor and the score was definitely good in certain aspects. But really?? Compared to Inception? Stupid. The last thing I was thinking about during The Social Network was how awesome the score was (which it really wasn't awesome or I would have paid more attention).

Think you can convince him to release some patches for Zebra? :ud:

In my world, Trent Reznor and Hans Zimmer are of equal talent. In this case, however, Zimmer's score should win, IMO. And if the score to Tron was in competition, I would want Joseph Trapanese to get equal recognition (he took care of the orchestral parts).

I think Howard made the patches for Zebra used in the movie :)

I thought he arranged, but didn't do any writing. Do I remember wrong? (Don't have my copy handy to look it up).

I'm sure that he did more than simply arrange. I've yet to read anything anywhere that would indicate that either one of the Daft duo has the musical chops for this kind of writing. Much respect for their fantastic grooves, of course!

I think Joseph Trapanese handled the orchestration (not the original writing). On that note, I counted three different orchestrators helping Zimmer out on Inception. Even the great John Williams uses an orchestrator. I'm not saying any of this to diminish their talents at all, but it was something that caught me by surprise when I first stumbled upon this little known factoid about movie composers a few years ago. Though, there are composers out there that do handle their own orchestration (Howard Shore, for example).

Actually, Zimmer and other Hollywood A-listers have a team that includes an orchestrator, synth programmer, studio techs, mixers, secretary, etc, etc, etc. There are also other composers involved that don't get screen credit (ghost writers). What I'm saying is that I've yet to find any hints of classical music schooling in either of the Daft guys that would account for a greater input than what I suspect went on. Of course, by ASSuming, you know what I'm making myself out to look like...

Oh, and FWIW, I LOVE Daft Punk and really like the soundtrack.
