Thanks to everyone who voted for my patches! I'm flattered that several voted and some even voted for both of mine ^_^ Similar tastes perhaps? I do tend to design sounds to please myself, rather than for a target audience.

I am hoping to get into patch design more rigourously, perhaps even commercially if I'm good enough, so this is an encouraging sign! Look out for some free patch banks coming soon for various synths.

This was a great contest, and hats off to the organizers and contributors!

My patches were RoboPad and TwitterLead.

I had fun exploring Zebralette, and that's what this is all about.

Just to learn more, I'd like to know if RoboPad really is garbage :)

Best regards,

Gino

Absolutely not!
And I think we both have had the same idea - to create vox-like pad/fx :)

Thanks to everyone who made this contest possible.

Cheers

"Rhythmic pad emphasizing beats 1 and 3."
That's no garbage!

"Hold a few keys, then add a few more on different
beats for interesing arps. Then move the mod wheel. "
Neither is this!

A bit of optimising, claring out and getting the beat sync idea more intuitive and you'll end up with a great patch! :)

I just want to say to not get discouraged if you got 0 votes. This contest had the most entries we've ever received and the quality of the patches was also quite good too. Even previous winners like hakey had presets that only got 1 vote, and he's been entering these contests since the start. And look at mcnoone, he's got some of the best free Zebra soundsets and he only got 4 points.

It seems like it's a combination of perseverance, luck, inspiration, and hard work to make a winning patch. Keep at it and to quote Howard from his Programming Analogue Synths manual (p27):

"There is no real need for more concave decay here because the sound stays bright, but ASSIGN 2 has been used to make the Attack convex. I know it makes only a subtle difference, but...The secret is to be obsessive about it..."

Been reading that about 6 months ago, great stuff!
I remember Urs said in a thread once here on KVR that the importance of envelopes is overlooked by many ..sadly!

EDIT: Here's what apears to be the updated version of that pdf "2002-2004"

pdf file is inside the archive.

Thanks guys! I feel better now :)

I didn't expect to win, but the lack of feedback made me very curious.
I guess it would be cool if there were comments for all entries.

Best regards,

Gino

No, absolutely not. I went back and played with these patches again and I'm sure it's not garbage. I had fun playing with the RoboPad, try to keep a key down and play with your PW, it's really cool.

Don't be discouraged. It's totally a personal taste. Less votes doesn't mean that it's not good. I totally agree with you, voters should write one or two line comment for each patch they vote. Now, go and make some more patches and share with us :)

Yes, I was a little surprised that neither of mine did very well. I thought that Hyperborea might at least be reasonably competitive. And I also have a suspicion that people didn't use aftertouch when auditioning Zyngk!, without which it's a fairly static sounding patch. But there you go.

Conclusions -

The biggest unknown variable here is the taste of the voters.

If you want to be competitive, don't make a patch that relies heavily on aftertouch.

It really is the taking part that counts!

True.

Secondly, one learns a lot about synth programming and sound design, so that itself is worth than anything...

Hi guys,

It's been great taking part in the contest... And something also I'd never done before..

The patches themselves were all pretty damn good imho.. It is a 'mood' thing as to what ones I like best and tbh I wish I'd given a little more time to them before I voted.. I'm in no way saying that my voted for favs would have ben different.. just that I think the patches deserved more of my time in order to really get to know them...
I played them by hand during testing... And I did change my mind quite a few times as to the ones I liked best..

Thanks Hakey and bmrzycki for organizing, running and keeping the whole process smooooth!

Congrats to 3ee (some luverly patchage dude!!)

I'm gonna give the Zebrify patch contest a go! Not getting any votes in this one hasn't put me off! :hihi:

fwiw my patches were 'port of escape' & 'broken worship 1.3'

I think the point Hakey makes about aftertouch is valid..

Cheers!

Ps 3ee what are you gonna choose?

Falling in love with Zebra so that would be my pick.
Already halfway through the Zebralette manual and had learned many new exciting things... the pdf is opened as we speak :D
Cheers and good luck with the next contest!
