Transfering plugins when upgrading

I'm considering doing a Muse upgrade of my Receptor Rev B to a 2+ Pro, and wondering how best to transfer all my many plugins/samples/patches across. I believe the upgraded Receptor will come back to me with the new OS etc, but none of my plugins etc. transferred, and so I'm wondering - is it just a matter of copying everything in the /c partition across from the old drive to the new one? If I do that, will the Receptor recognise all the plugins/banks/patches etc. that have been copied over?

Hi ndurant,

Part of the answer depends on what you already have loaded.

For example NI software and libraries are authorized with an authorization key that is tied to your CPU/Motherboard. You should deauthorize these (in NI's Service Center app), then do the HW upgrade, then copy back files, then reauthorize. If you don't do this, you could lose one of your authorization licenses that you purchased.

Other plugins have challenge/response authorizations, also somehow tied to a machine. You may have to re-authorize these after you upgrade and copy-back.

plugins protected by iLok are easy, just re-install on the new HW.

Some other things to keep in mind:
You will want to copy the contents of your "Banks and Patches" folder, to keep any receptorized presets that you have developed. Receptor knows how to associate these files with their respective plugins. You typically have to remove the bank-numbers from the folder names for banks and patches.

Other than NI Protected Sample Banks or instruments, you should be able to simply copy over any other sample data files.

Hope this helps. It is quite a bit of work to preserve your environment, but it is possible!

Thanks for the detailed answer, Kevin! It's a little more involved than I had envisaged, due to the authorisation being locked to the CPU/motherboard in some cases. I'm glad I asked, otherwise I might have gone ahead with the upgrade and lost access to some plugins!

One thing you mentioned:

By this do you mean back up the "Banks and Patches" folder, remove the Receptor-added bank numbers, and then after setting up the plugins again "install" those banks and patches, so the Receptor then assigns new bank numbers etc? Is it not as simple as directly copying that folder across, and the Receptor picking up all the banks/patches from before?

Thank-you!

Hi Neil,

Yep - that is exactly what I meant. I think that if you just copy the folders with the bank/patch numbers on the new HD, that receptor still will not register those patches (I think the OS uses this information to fill out a banks/patches XML file, that serves as the map for b/p numbers). In any case, it isn't too difficult to simply rename the folders without those b/p numbers, and drop them in the 'Install' folder on the new machine.

One other tip: I've noticed if a plugin disappears (eg for some reason you delete some plugin, refresh the plugin cache, and re-install that plugin) the Receptor presets that you made for that plugin get moved to a sub-folder of banks/patches called "Orphaned Patches". If you think you might have lost your presets, check in there, and they can be re-installed again.

Hope this helps, Regards,
Kevin L
