Zebra 2.5... freely modulate the octave range?

is there a octave range knob anywhere to be found? id like to roll through octaves within the same note (and not with the arppegiator)...

i know you can change the tuning on the global window, but it doesn't work on a note still in the sustain phase, it just works on the next note triggered...plus it just goes thru semitones instead of octave by octave


can this be done?

Yes - in several ways. Perhaps the easiest method is to use an LFO in user mode (Steps) to modulate oscillator "Tune".

so there is no simpler way? i'd rather be able to midi map it and twist a knob to go up and down octaves by hand, fluidly, rather than program a stepper (which will be the same pattern every time)

If you modulate the tune knob with the ModMapper you should be able to program in discrete steps

you can MIDI learn the "Tune" parameter on the Global page and then any MIDI CC value can set the semitone range from -24 to + 24. It doesn't change the pitch when a note is already played though, you'll have to stop playing for a second, turn the knob, start playing again. If you need to be able to change the octave of the sound while playing you'll have to modulate the soundsource, typically the Tune knob.

If you want to do this on the fly one way to do this is with the ModMapper:



In this example I have two oscillators, OSC1 and OS2 where OSC2 has a fixed pitch (-36 semis in this picture) and OSC1 with its default tuning set to 0 semis. MMap1 modulates Tune on OSC1 the full 48 semis.

On the right you have the Modmapper set to Map Quantize to give it that retro instant octave jump sound (Map Smooth is a much more subtle transistion). Choose your Modulator, I used Mod Wheel for this example but Breath (CC2) or Xpress (CC11) would be ideal as your extra knob.

Finally, set the number of steps to 9 by right clicking on the ModMapper window and set the step values to -100, -75, -50, -25, 0, 25, 50, 75, 100.

Now when you sweep your knob you'll hear OSC 2 stay at the pitch but OSC1 "jump" octaves. If you want both soundsources to jump just have them both modulate Tune with Mmap1.

i am using my mod wheel,which i usually have controlling other things, i could not find breath or xpress? sorry im new to using Zebra.

also can i save the modmapper settings? i also could not figure out how to make finer adjustments in the value range...so my numbers were not exactly 25/50/75...


i hope that just a knob on the oscillator or even one on the global that does just that (set the octave range) will be implemented in the future..

it would make things a lot easier, and i'm pretty sure a lot of people would use it!

Not yet no. Urs has said he'd consider adding module saving as a future option. To make the steps exact I used the modmapper zoom function. Just press the button the module that looks like [+]. The bigger interface that pops up is easily able to get the exact settings.

You'd need to use a tool that can transmit midi CC messages. I don't use Ableton but I'm pretty sure the macro knob connects directly to VST parameters and doesn't send CC.

To get your hardware controller to do this you'd need to consult the documentation for it and how to change the knob value. Set the Knob to transmit MIDI Control Change (CC) messages on either #2 or #11. After that you don't need to do anything in Zebra except select Breath or Xpress. Zebra automatically links 2-> Breath, 11->Xpress,

You cannot directly map it to a macro in Ableton.

I don't know what controller you use, but I use a Korg Z1 as my controller and I can re-map the knobs to any midi CC#... so if I want to use a particular knob on the controller to control the modmapper in Zebra, I would set modmapper to breath and re-map that knob to transmit midi CC#2

If your controller cannot re-map the midi CC values, you could still do it using a midi mapping utility.

ok, i tried all this...but no go


i remapped my controller, its an old evolution MK-461c

..for some reason it wont record any movement data into Ableton either..

but whether or not my controller is mapped to it, if i draw in automation in my clip for breathe or cc# 2 while the modmapper is assigned to it, it still doesn't do anything.

id like to be able to record automation into the arrangement view rather than the clip.

Set the modmapper to 9 steps, set the leftmost value to minimum and the rightmost value to maximum, then select the "straighten" function from the context menu.
