I too am annoyed with the torrent system.

Because I torrented this fine library down earlier this week, and am trying to keep the promise that we seed at least twice as many MB as we leeched when we downloaded it.

So far, I'm only up to about 250 MB.

C'mon, I don't have my whole life to do this, ya know! You guys need to get out there and start leeching or I'm gonna quite using uTorrent in outrage.

....And -- I'd like to say, in nothing but the gentlest voice and with the best intentions in the world, Andrew -- I think maybe you're speaking from a position of less than complete knowledge on the subject of torrents. It's certainly your right to choose to not use them, though.

i'm at the point where i get quite annoyed when companies/individuals offer massive downloads, but don't create a torrent for them; and to make things worse, no one has ever given a single reason why offering a torrent version is not a good idea.

I would love to try out this library but refuse on principal to use torrents; one as it usual use as a platform for piracy.

i think you'll find the http is the most used way to transfer pirated files (well, all files in general.) good luck opting out of that.

Firstly, thanks so much for all those who have worked on this great product.
Secondly, I'm very impressed by the excellent web site Mattias has produced to promote this library. So awesome job everybody.

I would love to try out this library but refuse on principal to use torrents; one as it usual use as a platform for piracy, and two, when in the past I tried using the most 'acceptable' torrent client for Windows, it defaulted to using a whole bunch of offensive domain names you'd never mention among self-respecting people!

I was wondering if it could be posted on sourceforge, download.com or archive.org, or some other free web site that allows large uploads of files?

I was thinking about my comments, and I realized I need to make it clear that I don't have any bad intentions and I don't think any less of you for doing things on principle--in fact, I admire it. And I admire you for keeping your principles. I just wonder if maybe you've thought the issue through completely--I'm sure you have. At any rate, I hope my comments don't drive you away--it would be a shame to lose someone who sticks to his principles. Stay with us. You're a good person.

andrewlsummer: As stated, bittorrent is just a file distribution network. While it is true that a lot of illegal content is distributed via torrents, just as much or more is distributed via standard http downloads (e.g. rapidshare and similar sites). If your reasoning is that things that are used for illegal activities should be boycotted, you can't download *anything* from the internet. In fact you shouldn't even be reading this because the protocol that downloads the html and images and content to your browser is the same one that powers the file servers full of warez. Not saying this out of spite, just pointing out the absurdity of your statement.

As also has been mentioned, torrents are used by various Linux distros and other open source software. It's also used by many online games for getting game content and patches out to the players -- World of Warcraft being the most well-known example.

For user here who don't want to (or cannot) install a full Torrent program (like me), try the Firefox extension FireTorrent. I just installed it, re-started Firefox and now (5 minutes later) the download is completed - and I can deactivate/remove this addon, if I want.

Another nice option is the Opera browser (http://www.opera.com/), which has built-in bittorrent support. And µTorrent can be installed on and used from a USB or other removable drive (and is about as intrusive and resource hungry as Window's Notepad or Calculator).
