Ok the only product i have to work with at this point is MULAB. well and iTunes if that counts. Is there any way i can get a song from iTunes into MULAB? What i'm really trying to do is like a mashup idea. Does anyone know how do something like that?

you need to convert mp3 to wav. do a google search for mp32wav

Thank you so much already. i downloaded a converter and now i have some songs in "wav" format. How do i import that to MULAB? I found the files and added in "add a sample" but it was just the same. Any ideas?

What do you mean "it was just the same"? Until you edit it, it should be just the same, surely?

The easiest way to get a file from your file system into MU.LAB is drag'n'drop. That will create a part that plays the whole file. What you then need to understand is what a "Part" is in MU.LAB. A Part specifies where to start and where to stop playing something. For an audio part, it specifies where to start and stop playing an audio file. You can use the Split command to decide where you want to split the initial part and then move bits around.

Well just the same as in there was no indication anything happened. Is there any kind of visual representation of the file on the screen?

Where is drag'n'drop? Sorry if i'm super newb. I've really only worked with like simplest part writing and sequences.

"Drag'n'drop" is a standard way of moving information around on a computer: click and hold on something with the mouse -> move the mouse to where you want to use the "something" -> let go.

So, go to the folder on your computer where the WAV file is and click and hold on it. Drag onto the MU.LAB window -- or onto where it's sitting in the task bar and wait for it to pop up. Make sure the mouse pointer is near the start of the composer window on an unused track, then let go of the mouse button.

You'll see the file you dropped displayed in the composer window (it'll fill in with the wave form).

Thank you so much! I Got it to work. Is there any way i can like split it into individual parts? It seems outrageous but its my ultimate goal. Like for example, maybe i just want a vocal track, then like make synths under that. Any ideas?

Most of MU.LAB's functions can be found by right-clicking the relevant object.

In this case: right-click a part and choose "Split".

If you want to do this very often, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to that function. More detailed info on function shortcuts is here: http://www.mutools.com/mulab/docs/funct ... tcuts.html

Muzys feature resurrection request: split to parts on peaks. That was a really neat way of quickly splitting up a file.

I assume you mean the "Auto Create Locators" function and "Auto Create Sequence Using Locators" functions, right? Note that Muzys did not have audio parts.

If it's just the one big wav file, it's not going to be possible to do this I'm afraid. A wav file in this case is the result of all the individual tracks being added together -- so, trying to get just the synth out is a bit like trying to get just the cocoa out of a baked cake.

That said, you may be able to isolate the vocals if they're in the centre of the stereo field. There's a few plugins for it, but I can only remember kn0ck0ut off the top of my head.

Someone's done a video tutorial on how to use it in this way, too:

Maybe i misunderstood Keenya, i thought he wanted to split the audio parts in time. But if you want to split the musical content within an audio file, then robenestobenz is spot on.

Yes, it created a sequence of notes that triggered the splits...

Ok so i downloaded Kn0ck0ut. Now i'm wondering how to get that in the program. Is it under VST plug-in manager? I'm sort of clueless. The tutorial was for a different program which didn't exactly help me. Does it make a difference that the song file is on one line? (unlike the tutorial)
