Someone makes a basic, raw and simple piano patch ... and our job is to finish the patch
Hmmm... not so sure about that idea myself. In a way it's even more restrictive (I think that's what George means by 'caged'). And who makes the starting patch?

Anyway, there's two weeks to mull it over or think up something better.

If anyone has any suggestions...

ZPC suggestion No.2:

"Play the XY Pads" - design a patch to be played using a single key press and the XY pads. So drones, atmospheres, oddities... etc would be the order of the day.

That's pretty cool, but I like the "Piano" theme more, in fact, I kinda love it! :D
For instance, creating a digital piano shouldn't be that hard for someone to fix up. I guess that goes for all kind of tones and textures featuring a stabby and expressive character.

Yep, so do I. But two people doesn't make much of a contest. :(

And though you may be right, making some kind of digital piano patch might not be too hard, that won't make much difference if people aren't even interested in making piano patches in the first place.

If you look at entries of any single ZPC/APC a good number will be pretty in-yer-face, electronicy, synthy type sounds - that seems to be the kind of thing that floats the boat of many Zebra/APC user. A "Piano" contest isn't likely to interest this crowd and so the numbers will be down - probably significantly.

Picking themes that will be interesting challenges whilst at the same time maintaining a reasonable level of participation isn't easy. I've said many times now that I was hoping that people would get involved with suggesting and discussing ideas for new contests, but that doesn't seem to be happening to the extent I would have liked...

(Any more suggestions anyone?)

Perhaps a more abstract theme for the contest:

"Time"

Make a patch focusing on the sound qualities that change over time - timbre or rhythm etc.

Another vote for a piano contest. I always tell myself that I'll enter these contests, but never do. I would definitely enter the piano contest, though

^ Thanks for the input everyone.

@Kaspar - 'Time' as an abstract theme is an interesting idea. :) It might be better to give just provide the title on its own and allow people to interpret it how they see fit.

I'd vote for the piano contest

a natural digital piano would be cool
sound is vibration, vibration is life

Yeah, that way you could for an example make a patch that sounds like an old piano :D

I'm also for a piano-themed competition. Sounds very intriguing.

Okay, it's looking up for the Acoustic/Electric/Digital Piano theme. :)

I'd still like to have a few more people saying they're up for it. So far we're up to four or five - double that would make it worthwhile.

As ever, anyone with any alternative suggestions, ideas for a future contest, or any other comments please speak your brains. ;)

I said this in another thread, but just in case...

I think the piano contest is a great idea.

It's a true challenge. I like adding electric / digital, because that's easier, but if someone actually does a convincing acoustic... well they win :)

Best regards,

Gino

Piano theme sounds dull. Where's the fun in auditioning 100s of piano patches of various degrees if failure ? Nah free for all says i.

Time to spook the opposition,i just found the super secret Bazille reverb.

Very nice! There are all sorts of pseudo-effects you can get since there are so many modulation options. I think this contest will be a great opportunity for me to learn some new tricks. :tu:
