I use the chickenman metering system, if it sounds good to me then everyone else can learn to like it.

Whatever metering system you use, you need to check your endresults on the right stereo speakers. It's all about volume and every Pro knows that best for this is the Dominator mx1o:

Bob Katz is the same guy that thinks all ported speakers have sloppy "one-note" bass. He is not infalliable by any means, and you're kidding yourself if you think taking a single person's guidelines as your bible is going to make your production methods flawless.

You would not believe some of the published quotes I've seen from respected engineers in the field. Some of it is flat-out embarrasing. I think Shy is totally right in his workflow choice honestly.

To answer an earlier question - yes, K-system can be applied to any DAW.

Some have the metering built in, like Studio One and Samplitude.

FYI - the free Voxengo Span now has it (added in most recent update).

You know, span looks like quite a tasty plug free or otherwise. One small sticking point of confusion, when you say studio one has it you are referring to the master, right?

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I was watching this video on YouTube ( ). Here he states that using the k-system is actually good because plugins and external equipment are working more "efficient" or are designed for that "loudness". If that is the case, would it not be better to mix and master using the k-system? In the end, as he explains, you can still crank up the master output to any level you want.

Helping plugs or outboard work at their most efficient would be a matter of good gain staging and calibration (in the case of outboard), which would ideally come long before you ever even got to the point of mixing (and thus, k-system).
Though, k-system does sort of act that way in terms of the master bus.

k-system's primary benefit is consistency/standardization when mixing, and is in part lifted from the strict dolby specs for scoring stages/mix rooms. That's where the 85db spl level comes from. Dolby chose it because it's theoretically where your ear hears "best".

Honestly, i'm really not trying to be cantankerous!
He's basically covering a lot of bases at once. The analog-ish waves plugs would require proper gain staging if inserted on a track. That has zero to do with k-system. K-system *could* apply if those plugs are on the master bus, though.

It's a good video, a nice overview of calibration/gain staging and using k-system to avoid crushed mixes.

Fwiw...i'm a huge fan of k-system (I do mix at k20, and have mastering shooting for k14). I generally avoid putting any plugs on the master bus, though.
