Hey Guys,
I have the Transmission bank. And under modern synths is a patch name Serendipity. Anyway when I play it at 96k it sounds real nice, but at 192k it sounds a lot different. Actually at 192k, many patches sound different.
Is this normal?
Thanks ,
Electrobop

Congrats Urs & Welcome Back!
Hey could you try Zebra at 192k and let me know what you think?
Thanks,

I could try 192k for you. Do you have a particular patch that you think sounds different? Also, what should I be listening for?
EDIT: Just saw the patchname, I have transmission. I'll let you know how it sounds.

Confirmed here. I hear more metallic artifacts in the sound Serendipity at 192 kHz (Reaper 3.75 32-bit, Zebra 2.5 (not beta) 32-bit, Windows 7 SP1 64-bit). I also tried the sound at 96k, 88.2k and both of those sounded the same as 44.1k.
Audio interface is the Edirol/Cakewalk UA-101 USB 2.0 interface.

I use always at 44.1k because i'm not used to render down to wave files my tracks, i leave them always as midi track and at 96k the cpu sometimes can't handle the effort.
But what i can say is that also between 44.1k and 96k there's a lot of difference in the sound output, you can hear it specially with pad sounds that have reso and noise.
On my Adams A7 i can hear the difference really well on the highs by their special tweeters, i don't know if this counts in a balanced opinion.

BTW i remember now that in an old thread Urs used to say "try at 96k" and you will hear..but i don't remember well what he said/wrote, could be 2 or 3 years ago...

I should probably be more precise.
At 192k I hear a definite difference in the overall timbre in the sound, as if a dissonant comb filter was included in the preset.
At 96k the highs are much more rich and present, almost as if I had an EQ on the track. Very nice indeed.
The big difference here is the metallic ringing found at 192 isn't present.
Urs, if you'd like audio samples I can whip up a few.

Hey Bmrzycki,
Thanks for checking this out for me. I think ACE sounds great but my CPU just gets overloaded. So a while ago I read that that Zebra & ACE have the same same filter so I started working at higher sample rates to get the best I could with more instances of Zebra.
44.1k vs. 96k - everything sounds so much better now and that's without the marijuana and ecstasy.
Eventually I got greedy and wanted to run Zebra and all my synths at 192k and thats when I noticed the sound differences.
But I'm glad its just not me.
Thanks,
Electrobop

No problem Electrobop, glad to help out.
I think Urs mentioned one time that he did support up to 192K so there may be a valid bug here. To be honest I think 96K is more than enough, but we'll let Urs be the judge of that.

It's a setting within your host or on your sound card. DAWs often have a sample rate option when rendering to file (wav/aiff) and sound cards have a setting for real-time digital to analog conversion. Both methods basically tell Zebra the sample rate and it reacts accordingly. Here's a screenshot of the render screen in Reaper:Mix Mouse wrote:OK dumb question; is this a setting within Zebra or within host?

Renamed thread so it wouldn't get lost.
