VSTi most like Virus C?

Omnisphere when I use the Virus samples, LOL. Kidding aside, within the context of what Virus soundsources are available (saws at different settings, PWM, a few other things), it does get some good Virus-vibe sounds...and you can do more to shape them than in Sylenth, with six LFO's, complex multisegment envelopes, more filter types, and a FAR more comprehensive mod matrix at your disposal.
Despite its more limited architecture, though, I do think Sylenth sounds good and can sound rather Virus-esque. Sylenth's phaser reminds me of the Virus phaser, which was an important aspect of many "classic" Virus patches that have been around since the early models.

I forgot to put Z3ta, Rapture, and Toxic on the list.
Here is my reasoning:
These synths I read on different forums were actually based on the Virus:
Dune - Rich studied a TI
Zebra2 - meant to replace a TI
Zero Vector - based on a Virus B
Vanguard was one of the first softsynths to be considered as a cheap Virus alternative.
Tone2 synths are like the evolution of Vanguard.
ElectraX has a very similar architecture to the Virus, 3 oscs & 2 filters.
Sylenth is the number one synth people refer to when people ask for a VST Virus.
Massive is another one people mention. Similar architecture to the Virus.
Albino & Predator also have a similar architecture to the Virus plus Papen sounds.
Komplexer/Largo have a similar architecture with good filters.
Z3ta is often compared to the Virus. Has the Virus Mod.
Rapture is Z3ta's replacement.

But we don't just talk about the same architecture? I guess when people refer to the Virus, you could compare any subtractive synthesizer to that and still not much of them would be close.
Zebra for example is a kind of its own and can do a lot more than a TI?
ElectraX is like 4 synths in one and offers more different synthesis types?
etc.

Sound-wise, I say Sylenth1, Massive and Helix.
Surge can load user waves and I do have a pack including TI waveforms, but I think it still wont be like the *real thing*.

A guy named Metrosonus over at GearSlutz evidently wrote it, but he says he's had a C for over four years.sysscan wrote:Which article was that?

Any clues as to where/how to find this? I don't seem to have it, and a search on the NI site returns nothingD-Fusion wrote:There is also one called SurivB for Reaktor but that one is based on the Virusb and not C.

I think Stephan V created the ensemble and Moander created the patch bank. Stephan also created Viral Extinction.

one of the things I miss about my virus b more than the sound is the groove/arp settings. There were countless automatic gated type grooves ready to switch on for any patch... these I feel are the hardest to find in a soft synth.
However, the one I have found that has a similar feature is the z3ta+, but the difference between the z3ta+ and the virus is the way you program a sound. f**king frustrating with the z3ta+, but lovely and fluid with the Virus... everything acted as expected on the Virus compared to the z3ta.
z3ta+ has a great sound, i feel that lots of the presets suck and maybe there are just way too many that its hard to focus on one and manipulating it to fit rather than just scrolling for hours. On my virus I could find a patch that was at least 50% of what I was looking for and edit it until perfect nearly every time, but the z3ta, tab-menu after tab-menu, mod sequencer with way too much going on... more filters than I can imagine. Overwhelming.
Now like many others has said... for the ease of the Virus and good sound (lacking the arp/groove thing and some deeper stuff) I would have to vote for Reaktor's Suriv-B. It is nearly a replica (missing deeper features though) GUI wise.
Either way, all those top tier synths others have mentioned will do a great job at making nearly anything a virus can (some more). I just picked up Rhino and while it is hard to learn, it is insanely deep with its own annoying GUI flaws.

Yeah i played around with Suriv-B, its a very nice virus replica! Too bad that arp section is missing, but the sounds i can get out of it are very convincing. Its true, there arent so much softsynths that have that "groovy-gated" arp sounds. Thats what i miss in all of them . If i remember correctly , Howard Scarr did a bank for Zebra 2 which is quite good. Z3ta+ i would recommend also.vaisnava wrote:one of the things I miss about my virus b more than the sound is the groove/arp settings. Maybe i would ask Stephen/Moander , if they want to continue with Suriv-B (maybe Suriv-C ??) . I would also donate for it.

i would also donate for a suriv-b full emulation... I imagine there is a reason he stopped, maybe hit a wall. I really do not know, but I am sure some talented Reaktor user could implement one, even if it is a small addition to the GUI, which could actually make it better than the virus in some respects.
If I do recall correctly though, the suriv-b also lacks in the LFO assignment department... there were a lot more options on the real Virus B, so it would be nice to see that expanded.
I do not know how to program or make anything in Reaktor or I would do it... I just never got the architecture know how.

Very nice article indeed. Which makes me wonder - if he compares the Albino to the Virus, how he thinks about Predator? I always thought Predator and Albino where pretty alike, no?KryoShift wrote:A guy named Metrosonus over at GearSlutz evidently wrote it, but he says he's had a C for over four years.sysscan wrote:Which article was that?

At least from the pure architecture Predator is more close to a Virus. Sound-wise I prefer and own Predator (only had the demo of Albino installed once). Regarding that article and Albino lagging quality in bass sounds, I appreciate Predator a lot for making bass, so maybe they are more different and Predator is more like the VA beast that Papen wanted to make after he went to make his own company.
