A u-he Music Contest?

Think there's some misunderstanding. I agree that all plugins used should be from u-he. No 3rd party synth or fx!
But as stated in the OSC rules: You are allowed to use eq, reverb, delay and so on from your host/sequencer or freeware as far as they don't change the sound too much. Not allowed are modulation fx. Limiter on stereo master is also allowed.
This is how I understand the OSC rules.

So let's say that even sequencer onboard effects are not allowed. Then a Zebra owner can use Zebrify and put all of the tasty FX on every track. And remember: there's even a compressor in Zebrify. And eqs and modulation fx ...
I don't want to argue here, just want to point out that owners of Zebra have a big advantage when they are allowed to use Zebrify.
Haven't even mentioned Uhbik owners.

And please, don't ban single mat whisky from the competition!

How about if all sound sources done by u-he synth(s) and for dsp use what we have and like as far as we don't overprocess the sounds.
That sounds like fun and still a reasonable "u-he" contest.
How's that?

Post

Hmmm... No, I'm still in favour of keeping things as purely u-he as possible. It is a 'music made with u-he contest', not a 'music made with u-he plus some freeware effects, plus host eq, compression etc contest'.

Yes, not allowing 3rd party freeware would favour owners of u-he payware, but that's unavoidable and not necessarily a bad thing, IMO.

Afterall, it is neither possible nor desirable to make an entirely level playing field - people with a good imagination and musical skill will also have an (/the?) advantage. ;)

What does everyone else think?

Define 'overprocess' in a way that is unambiguous.

Post

A bit of eq here and a bit of compression there... a bit of reverb here and a bit of delay there ... something to get the mix... that would be simple as fun :)

Overprocessing would imply to get a way different sound out of dsp rather than focusing to get a clean and original sound out of the u-he sound sources. (So yeah... no overpreocessing!)

A contest where only u-he plugins are used is unafordable at least for me atm.

....

Or how about (for this 1st edition of this kind of contest) a TyrellN6 only contest with the theme "Synthesizer Music".

Where we can also use fairly basic stuff to get a mix going. (and mandatory, the TAL Chorus-60) :hihi:

So much of that is subjective =/= unambiguous.

I think that Tyrell may well be the next OSC - no sense in running two identical contests.

Didn't you win Zebra the other month? :-o

I like the sound of this. I'm interested.

I agree completely. But I'm biased(I own loads of U-he payware :hihi:) The demo of the Uhbik suite is still usable though is it not?(If I remember correctly, all it does is make intermittent fuzzly sounds.)
But then there is Bazille(which is a free beta as of now?)...which means that if you've got any kind of skill, you could make somewhat of a fair stand against the local Zebra keepers.

Yes, but don't know why I was thinking of Uhbik and the u-he effects mainly when I claimed that. :D

So, than yes.... I wouldn't mind creating a track with few Zebras and Tyrells :) (+a master limiter :P)

Yes, I think that some compression/limiting on the master would be okay. :)

Does anyone know if Zebrify and ZRev come with the Zebra demo and if so how crippled they are? Just wondering whether they might be usable for those without u-he payware.

Post

I should really ask - Urs, are you okay with all of this?

Any thoughts on the purely u-he plugs vs. u-he plus 3rd party freeware debate?

Post

Guys, Tyrell will be next month's (May) One-Synth-Challenge just so you know.

Have long been toying with the idea of a Zebra or U-he OSC event too, but maybe Tyrell for May and Zebra June is a bit too close?
