yeah, possibly...

(btw the idea for now is an all u-he plugins contest not a Zebra version of OSC)

The problem is, if the u-he music contest is shelved, I'll have to come up with a replacement idea for June's u-he patch contest and then try and drum up enough interest to make it all worthwhile.

Okay, seeing as Tyrell is this month's OSC it does seem that running another u-he music contest in June might be a little too close.

The good news is that V'ger has offered the use of the OSC resources (the stickies, website, soundcloud) for when we do decide to run it. Seems like a great offer to me! 8)

It would also give us plenty of time to bash out the details.

What does everyone think?

+1

Let's keep the rules simple :)

Another question: Are we allowed to use u-he's magware plug-ins?

- ZebraCM
- Podolski (cut down version of FilterscapeVA from German Sound&Recording Mag)
- ltmLab Drummachines (some 60 different drumbox sample-based plug-ins also from German Sound&Recording Mag)

Don't know if those are hosted by other mags, too.

ZebraCM and Podolski definitely.

Not sure about the drum machine - the samples that it's based upon aren't u-he, which seems contrary to the spirit of a u-he music contest. It depends upon what everyone else thinks....

hakey,

What would you think of three types of entries ...

A :: Single Synth - e.g. Zebra and only Zebra
B :: Triple Treat - 3 U-he things - the choice is yours
C :: Uber U-he - any combination of U-he products

Exclusion: Tyrell - since the OSC competition is alreadly running here at KVR.

Notes: A quick (and honest) explanation of what you did, how you did it and why you chose the category you did.

Time: 5 mins max

Format: FLAC (or would peeps feel nervous about that?)

... ?

It's a possibility. :) It obviously becomes considerably more complex to organize, and I lean toward keeping things as simple as, but if enough people like the idea it might be feesible.

I'd prefer to allow Tyrell - just so that as many people as possible have a chance to take part (eg someone who has uhbik but no u-he payware synth), but again, what does everyone else think?
Time: 5 mins max
Yep, I agree (though, I think worded as 'around 5 minutes max').
Format: FLAC
There is an offer from V'ger to host this in the OSC stickies in the Instruments part of the forum and they use Soundcloud for uploading tracks (which I guess uses some kind of not brilliant compression algo - not FLAC).

If we don't go down this route the question then becomes how do we upload and distribute our tracks?

Post

OK, simplified ... just a bit ... :)

A :: Single Synth - e.g. Zebra and only Zebra
B :: Uber U-he - any combination of U-he products

Tyrell included to keep things open ... fair enough.

"We suggest keeping the duration of your track to under 5 mins." It's a suggestion - fans of Bela Tarr / Andy Warhol / Krzysztof Kieślowski should feel no constraints.

Mentioned FLAC since it *is* nice to listen to more complex works as lossless files ...

Soundcloud re-encodes everything as a mp3 @ 128 in an flv wrapper. Not great. But if downloads were permitted we get a chance to listen to a better quality version offline. But ... I'm not sure what others feel about that one, given that great big "free" community library out there.

For distribution, Soundcloud seems to me like a practical option, given it's well known, it tends to work and has a decent API.

And the prize? Perhaps something slightly eccentric and good fun (rather than software)? Like a pair of socks ... ? (ref: Zimmer interview)

Tracks on soundcloud often sound like heavily compressed mp3. So I recommend uploading in best possible quality (wav, aif, flac) or at least as hi quality mp3. But you always can download the unprocessed file if the user allowes it.

My suggestion for the contest rules:
- no different entry types
- 5 min time limit
- synths allowed: Zebra, Zebralette, ZebraCM, FilterscapeVA, TripleCheese, Podolski, TyrellN6, ACE
- fx allowed: Zebrify, ZRev, Filterscape + Q6, Uhbik, MFM1, MFM2
- use of your host's channel eq
- one limiter on stereo master to smooth volume and prevent peaks
- upload as flac or wav

These rules sound great to me :)

And I think everyone should provide some details about their track (Made with selfmade presets or presets from the userlib, which plugins were used etc.)

yeah these rules seems good.

what about the drums ? would sampled drums be accepted ?
and if people talk about details concerning their tracks, wouldn't it void the anonymus aspect of the contest ??

I think everything, including the drums, should be done with U-He products.

I've never used the soundcloud dropbox or something like that but I think we could write the track information into the soundcloud track description.
This way the contest could stay anonymus (I think) :)

Ok, should be pointed out clearly:

No sampled drums, no other samples (loops, fx, instruments,...)! u-he synths only!

Try building your own drums with the synths. I'm doing a song for the OSC at the moment. It's a lot of work but much fun, too!

Absolutely not! :-o

I'm not sure anonymity is that important - they don't bother with it in the OSCs.
