@eDrummist: I'll definately look into Waves Factory. Thanks for pointing me in that direction!

I saw that Sonivox had some stuff, but I wasn't sure it was good enough quality for what I'm wanting....I may give it a second look though, since you mentioned it. :-)

@ everyone: It's too bad that someone doesn't make one or port one for sale. This is easily a gap where someone with some business skills could quickly put out a product--especially if they already have a product available in a format that extranslator can convert. (5 minutes of converting, and possibly a little fine tuning, and done--A new product!)

Actually Sonivox has decent .sf2s, especially the Rick Guitars, but yeah soundfonts are somewhat limited in comparison to some formats.

Here are a few companies that do put out quality guitar soundfonts:

Precisionsound
http://www.store.precisionsound.net/

SoundBrewer
http://www.soundbrewer.com

Jensen Sounds
http://www.jensensamples.com/

If you're into free guitar vstis, then Spicy Guitar would be a nice addition.

And I believe Mildon Strummer 2 and Manytone's ManyGuitar are still on sale through the Indie Dev Collective.

Cool! you mentioned some links I hadn't heard of, so I'll check them out!!!

Thanks!

Audiojunkie, have you tried these guitars in soundfont format:

(open in Google Chrome and it can translate the page for you)

You can convert those in ESC to SFZ and change the velocity mapping from there.

They're FREE ?!?!?!? COOL!!!! :D

Thanks for the tip!

I really like what people are sharing in this thread!!! A lot of really wonderful people are pointing to a lot of really cool stuff!!!

Thanks guys!!!!

By the way, I was looking into Keyfax's midi strum patterns, but I read that they follow the general midi format, and I don't know if that applies to a lot of these custom mapped guitar multisamples.... What's everyone's take on that? Are these multisamples mainly sticking to the general midi standard, or are you finding a lot of custom variation?

Thanks again,

I'm still seeking that elusive holy grail, and I suspect that without Kontakt, I may be out of luck. I may have to collect bits and pieces until I can get Kontakt. (I've been against any kind of copy protection, but it's looking more and more that I may have to break down in the end). But I digress...

I've been doing some more net searching, and thought I'd share what I just found:

http://www.sampleoddity.com/thrashdi/

This looks really interesting! It's in Kontakt 2+ format, and uses .NKI, so I may be able to convert it with ESC.

Shreddage sounds so dope, it's the only package by another sound designer I'm definitely going to buy soon! Love the demos, couldn't be from a better guy :)

Hi Zircon, I haven't been able to try it yet. Spring cleaning and family has taken up most of my Saturday. I hope to get to it a little later tonight. :-)

By the way, I think it's really cool of you to let me try converting things. I emailed the developer of Extreme Sample Converter last night, to see how well he thought a translation from Kontakt to SFZ would be. I haven't heard back from him yet, but I'll post and let everyone know what he tells me.

Thanks again,

Hey Sean, from Kontakt _to_ SFZ should actually be pretty accurate. It's from SFZ _to_ Kontakt that may be a little fidgety.. Either way it should do a fairly decent job converting for you.

That's great to know! I hope to get a chance to pull out my laptop and do some experimenting in just a few minutes. :-)

Hi Zircon! :-)

I want to report back to let you know that the patch you sent me converted just fine, as far as I can tell.

It was a simple patch that didn't have any keyswitching and stuff, right? If all of your patches are this way, my guess is that converting to SFZ would work well. :-)

Could you tell me about the other patches you have in your package? How difficult do they get (ie how much scripting and such)?

Thanks again for such great support (even though I'm not even a customer yet)!

No problem at all, and I'm glad to hear they worked. The original Shreddage does not require any scripting or keyswitching whatsoever. You can lay things out several ways:

1. Left hand = powerchords, right hand = single notes. Low velocities = tight mutes, high velocities = more open, highest velocity = pinch squeal. Releases samples are layered on top. For FX samples like neck slides or pick scrapes, that's a separate patch. Most people prefer this.

2. Left hand = palm mutes (lower velocity = tighter, higher velocity = more open), right hand = sustain. This is for either sustain OR powerchords, but you would then need to load two different sampler instances to have powerchords and sustains. I actually prefer working this way as I find it very intuitive to do rhythm riffs in my left hand and full, sustained notes in the right.

Shreddage X is another matter. We added more articulations there and legato scripting, which is basically Kontakt-only. The extra articulations involve the modwheel (not previously required for the original Shreddage.)

Still, even if you don't get SX, the original is really powerful. Just compare the demos to any other library out there. It was designed to sound great where other samples just fall apart.

@Zircon: Cool! Thanks for the info! By the way, how will that translate over with Directwave? It doesn't do any scripting, does it? I plan to use Directwave in the future, so I'd be interested in your plans for that...

--Sean

Yeah, DirectWave is fairly basic, so it will inherit the non-scripted/modwheel-based content (but maybe some custom patches from SX, modified.)
