Yes, voting on such a large number of tracks is a challenge. I've actually started knocking up a very quick and dirty Silverlight app to help me listen and vote. The basic idea is that it downloads the playlist from archive.org, and then allows me to set ratings and add comments to each file as I listen to it. It will also support an "eliminate" button to remove tracks from the playlist until you are down to five (hidden tracks can be restored). All the comments and ratings would just be stored in the isolated store on the machine you were on. I might even support scoring each track against several criteria like some people here have suggested, and let it work out for you which your top five are. If I find the time to finish it I'll open source it in case anyone else finds it useful.

I was wondering if due to this, shouldn't we to make a 1-10 point voting system next time if the number of tracks are more than 20 or 25?
Hm yes maybe, but there has already been calls to lighten the voting and this is the opposite..

More input on this from others please.
True, i didn't noticed was almost an opposite idea.
Anyway, although there would be 20 tracks, with 1-10 voting system wouldn't be easier? Maybe a bit slow (only a bit) but easier to choose.

I will explain it.

People says they haven't enough time. But now think, time to listen all the tracks? Or time for voting? This last just will take some seconds-minutes.
All voters must listen all the tracks, the same ammount of time, despite the voting system. This is what takes some hours.

You have Ruedirena as good example, he likes to vote, and also, he likes to expand himself with nice comments for everybody. This is good.
But some other voters just come and put their list quickly with 5 lines. And this is good too.
This would be still free, despite the voting system.

I mean, it would take the same ammount of time whoever is listening all the tracks. But, for voting? I'm going to vote this one, this and that. This last is quick. What really takes much time is the high number of tracks and listening to them.

Now we are voting 1-5, but this time with 30 tracks, we expend more time on thinking in things like "Who deserves this 5?" "Or this 1?" "Should i leave this contester out?"
I was having a headache today when i was voting, i didn't know who leave out, etc... This took me more time than just vote.

Now think this, with a 1-10 voting system, yes, it would take about some seconds-minutes more to vote this one, this and that.
The little 5 lines with some comments (as normal thing here) just will be extended to 10.
But in the another hand, we wouldn't be wasting too much time in "Who should i to leave out?" "Who deserves this 5 or this 1?" Because there is almost too many points for almost everyone.
This time i felt a bit bad when i left someone out and deserves at least one point.

Anyway, i like to stick to the rules, i mean, i don't like to come here the last and change everything. I like the actual rules too. It was only an idea, just when there is a high number of contesters.
We don't need to use every month.

@Markheat
Nice idea man. A powerful and useful tool for KVROSC. Cheers.

Have a good day everybody and good luck! :)

Another method I've seen used is to give voters a fixed number of points, and allow them to dole them out as they see fit. For example, if you had a total of 10 points to vote with, and there were two standout tracks, you could give them each 5 points. Or, you could give 2 points each to five tracks, etc.

The hardest thing is leaving people out. IMHO it's it seems fairer to vote for a smaller number of winners - it feels more like singling out the winners than separating "winners" from "losers". But in the case of contests like this, I think voting for a larger number might help because you're voting for something that's very subjective. You may really admire someone's work but not like the style, find another less musical but more inventive, etc. So you want to show appreciation for all of them. :)

But I'm new and certainly not complaining, just throwing it out there. In any case, the more tracks in the competition that you have to listen to, the more artists listening to your track, providing feedback, etc. Can't be a bad thing.

5 - PocVecem - Vulcan Jazz
I loved it the first time I heard it and it is still my favorite track.

4 - DocJon - Freak Me Out
Great beat and voice-like effect. Excellent production too.

3 - evo2slo - you are the blade
It gets more tense as the track progresses. I just love the screaming sound in the middle of the track.

2 - bzur - Rachael
Dreamy and lovely.

1 - TommyBear - Where are you?
Please make a longer version. When the percussion enters near the end it makes me want for more, not for a fade out :)

could always keep the 1-5 system, but with 25+ submissions allow like 3 to 5 honorable mentions. and honorable mentions are given say 1pt or a half a point, maybe a little silly for a half a point, but just throwin' another idea out there ;)

+1024! Too many good tracks... It's a difficult choice.

Also, OSC_Tyrell_Drums.zip is available for download. Includes sampled drums (wav, 44/24) and preset for Shortcircuit v1.1.2.
(Samples are already processed: compressor, EQ, HP-filter)
The cat has four paws: in, out, ground and power supply )

Thank you! But you see how it is: he didn't find her (where are you?) and you also didn't find what you were looking for :). It means it's right! ;) But who knows, maybe one day I'd remake this song using also some other instruments.

As for voting, there have been some good ideas mentioned. Personally, I like the idea that when the number of songs is more than 20, one can give 2 or 3 special points (meaning 1 p. for a song). Or, alternatively, if there's more than 20 songs we might have to choose 7, and if there's more than 30, we might have to choose 10. But probably the thing with additional bonus points is better. Cheers!

This is actually the system we had before, but dropped when it became clear that it skewed the results when some would spread the votes on many, other on few.

Problem was that this was not necessarily because of the true feelings about the songs, but because it takes even more time and work to do and then some people just chose 3-4 to give the votes to when they were in a hurry, while others were thoughtful and gave to many.

So let's say that both agreed on which song was the best, but what actually happened is the 2nd place song of the one who gave few votes, in effect go the same amount of points as the 1st from the one who gave to many..

Extra or bonus points might not be as bad for the top placings, but the effect would be the same for the lower placings I fear.

About 1-10 score taking the same time to give as 1-5, this sounds right on paper, but I've tried both in the Music Cafe competitions and here, and there's no doubt for me that 1-5 is easier.

Like Markheath, I also do the elimination technique. First load all songs on the phone and then listen for a week or so wherever I am, then in Foobar at the PC delete them one by one till the 5 remains, then rank those. It would be easier to eliminate to 10 than 5, but the time consuming bit is the ranking..

-1.

i would have not voted if i had to distingue amd put in order 10 tracks.
and i bet many would not bother either.
if it was for me i'd only vote the top 3. the so called standouts.

in this comp for example
after first listen i had a clear idea which ones were my favourites....it was more of a challenge to select 4th and 5th place for me than it was to select my favourite .
the idea of having to go deeper and distingue between 8th and 9th etc would become tedious....would just put me off voting.

Irresistable bass line, very strong vocal sounds, how did you create them?
Well, I'd like to claim that I spent hours programming some amazing vocal patch but in fact it was one of the presets!!

The Slicer patch (in the Tasmodia folder) played over a few notes, with tiny amounts of mod wheel for variation, dropping down an octave for the hook line - instant 'Freak Me Out'!!

I've finally started giving all the tracks a proper listen and making comments.

This is NOT easy! I think the key, when there are this many entries, is for some of you to make really crappy rubbish so voters can dismiss those tracks out of hand. :D

Post

The main reason I'd like a 10 point score is because I wanted to give some points to other great entries below my top 5 that really deserved at least some points. It just felt wrong to not give some points to other truly great entries!

Well I've been slowly building up my Silverlight rating utility helper. Hopefully be ready for a beta release soon (although probably too late to be useful for this round of voting). I also have been thinking about it defaulting to anonymous mode, where you don't see the user name of the tracks. (originally I was going to hide track name as well, but I think knowing the track name is part of the experience - certainly this month there have been lots of songs whose titles seem particularly appropriate).

Code so far is here.

Very excited for this! :hyper:
And don't worry if you can't finish for this round. You are making a great effort, so take your time and don't worry. The intention is what counts.

Is there any screenshot somewhere?

Cheers. :)
