It's a browser app, but it can't see any existing files on your hard disk unless you explicitly grant it permission. It downloads the files from archive.org (your browser should cache them, so once played, they will load quickly afterwards). I save your ratings as a small XML file in what is called "isolated storage" - where Silverlight (like other browser plugins) is allowed by the browser to store its settings with a disk space limitation.
Silverlight does have an "out of browser" mode, where you can grant the application elevated privileges so it can run with the permissions a normal Windows app would, but you have to explicitly install it (by right-clicking and selecting "Install [app name] onto my computer..."). My app doesn't require you to use that mode.

Weird, the final cut ended up being really easy! the cut from 31 was tough, because I was thinking about so many factors, composition, use of Tyrell to make interesting patches, mix/production, all while trying to reign in my personal preferences (as I usually end up giving points to a piece that I respect for its creative merits but doesn't fit my personal taste so much) I ended up with eight that I thought made strong arguments on all points. As it turned out, I totally dug five of them! Here they are!
5 points: Acronym - Radium
4 points: Stonail Cycling on Tyrell's Surface
3 points: PocVecem - Vulcan Jazz
2 points: IrionDaRonin - From Daydream to Reality
1 points: elipsis1 - phatso

Done!
Sorry if I'm wordy - I took notes and made positive (only) comments about all the tracks, so I included them here (for what it's worth). Tried to put aside my personal taste for certain styles and focus on whether the track worked as a whole musically and sonically, was original (even if it's genre wasn't
), and displayed Tyrell's strengths . No one just dialed it in; tie-breaker for me ended up being the ambitiousness of the track.
Steplton - 9:00pm (5)
It took a few listens to realize how much analog goodness and originality there is in a track that manages to use one synth and sound like a fusion band doing an 80's TV theme (I mean that as a compliment
). Great mood setter. Great chord progression. Great solo. Great mix. Great.
Pocvecem - Vulcan Jazz (4)
Original percussion, super-clean mix, gorgeous and musical. This was my most subjective vote - not that the track lacks ambition or sonic merit. It's just stupid good to listen to. Lack of a positive opinion regarding this track would be a sign of hearing loss.
Mleghorn - Isle of the Dead (3)
Remarkably ambitious arrangement of abstract expression, with incredible variety of sound. It took guts to submit an atonal mix, which demands repeated listening. Given time, it completely works. Has the makings of a soundtrack...
Mike777 - Return to Home Planet (2)
Nice sparse, crisp percussion to balance the lush pads. Another ambitious arrangement. Sounds like it was made with a lot of love and attention. These OSC tracks seem highly personal - a reflection of the composer/producer's artistic vision rather than just an attempt appeal for votes (I'm glad this is not a dubstep competition). This track, to me at least, stood out in that respect.
DocJon - Freak Me Out (1)
Giorgio meets Donna Summers' creepy uncle! Even without the (fantastic) "vocal" trick, it's great disco, and another gutsy call, genre-wise. It is was it is, and it's good at it.
To the rest - I enjoyed every track and admired the work and creativity. Learning a lot here...
Good luck to all.

5 pts : Evo2slo - biomechanical god
amazing beats & great melodies. I'dd love to hear this with singing and real instruments.
4 : Evo2slo - you are the blade . I feel bad for chosing 2 songs from the same person but it is my second favorite song. The saddest goodbye comes very close in third place though.
3 : IrionDaRonin - the saddest goodbye
2 : Branis - The Tannhauser gate
Nothing special to say that hasn't been said before.
1 : Mulperi - Tyrell . reminds me somehow of the bicycle training in Punch-Out. lol

Wow sly fly I am truly honored! (your payments in the brown bag below the fire escape... ha ha). Feel free to lay some vocals on if you like, unfortunately my tone deaf singing makes the neighbors baby cry. The main riff in biomechanical god I ended up recording an electric guitar for then converting the audio to midi in Cubase's variaudio. I think at some point i'm going to revisit it and lay down a heavy fuzz tone. Recently got a killer fuzz pedal called Lunar Module Deluxe. Was on the waiting list for 3 months. I think it would be perfect for it, so if I redo it I'll be sure to let you know! Thanks for your nice comments... made my day!

5 Doc John - Freak Me Out
4 JoeCat - Another Industrial Accident
3 gorgorgathgorgorgor - Intro could have been shorter and the drums could be more tweaked. Maybe the end could have been less dissonant. The start of the track is cool, wish ou kept and built on that plot.
2 Stepelton - 9:00 pm (the break on 1:49 *uks it up a bit)
1 Cap Dan - Discussion
I like many of the tracks, but I prefer those with a beat..
Learned a lot about this synth in this challenge I'm sure I'll contribute another when there is another synth I like.
cheers

I guess I need to get my votes in before time runs out. I really enjoyed listening to the contributions this month. My shortlist sat at 9 for a very long time, but I'm down to my top five now:
PocVecem - Vulcan Jazz (5 points) - love this track, nice mellow groow, liked the key change, very well produced.
Steplton - 9:00pm (4 points) - I didn't warm to the intro, but after several listens, this one became one of my favourites
Bzur - Rachael (3 points) - a really beautiful melody, this was one that I just couldn't bring myself to eliminate. Love the bit a minute in. Not too sure about the 5ths lead sound though. Richard D was a very strong track too, and made it into my final 9.
Yeager - What the Fugue (2 points) - Every OSC there is one track that reminds me of the old Monkey Island theme music and this is the one. I just find this a very enjoyable listen.
Bstageboss - Night Race to Arecibo (1 point) - There were a lot of very well-named tracks this contest, with sounds really fitting well with the titles. This was one of the best, although honourable mentions must also go to Joecat and Gorgorgathgorgorgor for their evocative sounds and titles.
A few other honourable mentions go to Doc John for a brilliantly produced piece, even though I found the robotic voice sound a little irritating, to Acronym (Dryrell) for those dischords that somehow seemed to work, and to Mulperi and Branis who came very close to getting my votes.
Well done everyone. Maybe one month I'll find the time to create my own entry.

Again, some impressive talent.
Soo, after a lot of torturous decision making, I've decided to vote thusly:
StepItOn - 9:00 pm - 5 pts
What can I say? I'm a sucker for the musicianship on that one. And the track keeps my interest throughout. The intro seems a little long, but the rest of the track more than makes up for it.
Doc Jon - Freak Me Out - 4pts
There's something so 80's disco about this track that it could be funny, but it's done sooo amazingly well that I can't resist the unapologetic joy that comes through. I feel the love...really!
mleghorn - Isle of the Dead - 3pts
From the ultra disco we go to the ultra avant garde. What a trip! The sound design alone makes this one a standout, but it's quite well done from a compositional standpoint, too. And there's certainly nothing like it in this competition!
PocVecem - Vulcan Jazz - 2pts
Some cool percussion programming in this one. Add to that a good sense of breakdown placement, some sweet arrangement chops and a killer key change and you've got a track that doesn't get stale on repeated listening. Nicely done!
IrionDaRonin - From Daydreaming to Reality - 1pt
A clean, good mix and a very moody atmosphere make this track a great listen. These qualities are quickly becoming IDR's trademark, aren't they?
Lots of other good stuff, but not enough points, and I'm out of time for now as well. Thanks to the contest runner and all entrants again this month. This competition is getting more and more challenging, and that's a good thing. That said, I'll be taking a break this month; things are getting a bit too busy for me to enter again for a while. Good luck to everyone else though!
Cheers,
STV
