+1 for FMO only (no OSC, but any other modulators allowed)

Post

FMO is out of my wheel house, so I would love to dig into this one, and learn more.

Is any sound style ok, or will it be Leads or Pads, etc. (Miami Vice influenced sounds).

Yep. :)

edit: When I say 'fmo only', I do think any sound-source goes for modulator. Just as long as the only sound comes from the fmo module.
I would like a real FMO o9nly contest,
no other sound sources

I'd like to have only FMO's in the upper pane
and FX in the lower pane

and any modulations by envelopes and lfo's and modmaps etc should be allowed
sound is vibration, vibration is life

How about if OSC's are allowed but *only* as sine wave generators (using spectroblend) placed before an FMO in the grid?

I think that's a great idea :)

That's what I thought also... but the FM contest kinda looses it's magic then... or 2 extra osc modules with no osc effects. :D
I would limit the modules even more so we can get creative sounding more like the FM7.

Why? It would still be a purely FM contest.

Yes, it would still be a FM contest but I felt that even thinking of the OSC module will kinda take away from a raw FM contest.. but it's fine.. I got over it! :D

Post

well my idea is still no other osc's

that will make it maybe a little harder,
but also cleaner

Okay, I'm happy either way.

What does everyone else prefer - 'FMO's Only', or 'FM Only'?

Mixer modules should be allowed though.
Many classic FM routings aren't possible without them :)

Good point!

An idea would be to include all necessary modules to emulate the DX7 for exemple, as it is the gran'daddy of FM synths.

I find FM synthesis rather complex and difficult to master, "we" gotta nail some good basic FM tricks before expanding the sonic architecture.. and Zebra is more than ready for expansion. :)

That means allowing two pure sine OSCs (only Spectroblend, just one partial, single mode). Sounds like a very reasonable suggestion.

BTW: DX7 algorithms 4 and 6 aren't possible because the feedback loop spans more than one operator. Doesn't matter much... as far as I remember, I never used the feedback loops in those particular algos.

List of DX7 algorithms here: http://www.adp-gmbh.ch/csound/dx7/algorithms.html
