Only because YouTube writes "this video was taken down because GEMA didn't give us the right to show it" doesn't mean that it's GEMA's fault. In fact they could as well have written "Sorry but this video doesn't make enough money for us". But people don't see that.
They think that GEMA is some evil organisation that uses mafia methods to rip people off. In fact Google (owner of YouTube) is a multi billion dollar company that tries to muscle German music composers, texters and publishers down to maximise its profits.
And then you get self-righteous artists who think they have eaten wisdom with really big spoons who do insulting propaganda videos. That person obviouly has no clue what GEMA is, and what it does. She also has no clue what YouTube is and what it does.
sigh
I'm about to sign up with GEMA just for that. To support fair use of copyrighted material.
To put things in perspective, GEMAs offer was 1c per view. That's 10 times less than other platforms pay. If Google isn't able to make this profitable, then they should sack some manager, because others obviously can.

Do you have a source for this?Urs wrote:To put things in perspective, GEMAs offer was 1c per view. That's 10 times less than other platforms pay.
According to this older statement from Google (see update, sorry for the German source), GEMA demanded a 50 times(!) higher fee than the British PRS, which was already quite high.
Seriously, GEMA is NOT AT ALL known to ask reasonable prices even from musicians - thus I am really curious why you are on their side.

Ah, nevermind.
YouTube blocks a lot of videos in Germany because they couldn't crack the German equivalent of Ascap. Yet. Which means, in Germany an artist gets paid for airplays on video streaming sites. Only, YouTube refuses to pay their share, moaning about the non-profitability.
However, YouTube's owner makes money by selling advertisement. The higher the click-through rate, the more money Google can make. The more Google knows about a websurfer, the better can they serve ads that the user is likely to click, e.g. in his gmail interface.
Now, if I was Google, I would use YouTube as a giant profiling machine. I would track the videos that each user watches and create a profile by the keywords attached to the videos. I would think that YouTube users are people who are prone to click random content, and thus are probably easier to manipulate to click ads than people who don't like YouTube. I would thus try to keep YouTube as accessible as possible and not ask too much money for it. I would then pretend that YouTube was indeed a loss operation. I would use that argument to trick copyright holders into giving YouTube streaming rights for free. When in fact YouTube would be a giant catalysator for my other money making machines.
Now, if I was a regular guy, I would wonder why a certain group of hackers takes the side of Google in this, and not the side of the copyright holders. I would then realise that both Google and that group have one common interest: The avoidance of copyrights. I would figure that Google has shown various times how they profit from copyrighted material without licensing it for the asked for fee, e.g. news aggregation or scanning books, or (sic!) YouTube. I would then argue that a certain group of crackers is pro-actively fighting a little war against intellectual property (among other things, some of which I do agree on). I would then see that their actions are mutually beneficial. Even though me (if I was boss of Google, again) would never shake that hacker's hand. Ever.

WELCOME TO THE VENTURESHARK FAQ!
WHO MADE VENTURESHARK AND WHY?
VentureShark was created by musicians who wanted to apply the concept of human slavery to the digital realm. The initial business model revolved around the idea that a user could make money by selling stolen goods online. This model has since been abandoned in favor of making venture capitalists and so called 'Chief Executives' realise that they too can be exploited for free labour and shaking them down for cash.
DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER WEB 2.0. STARTUP WITH SOME GOOFY NAME?
