I pretty much stopped using a phaser when I started with vsti recording, simply because the chorus effect usually filled that niche.

The Sanford Phaser is a lot like the original stomp box, and really a lot of fun to experiment with. Some great stuff comes out of that thing. One of the best FX freebies.

For phaser with something different is the Uhbiks-P which really has crazy controls for some extreme applications of the effect. Great sounding at any setting though. Heck, it's Urs. (There's a winner in the U-he slogan contest if there ever was one, hmmmm?)

hehe, well, yes you certainly could do that, though imo your point isn't as valid as you might think:

- artsacoustic modelled the mk2, which is by far known as the best sounding of all the smallstones, and i really doubt you'd get _thatone_ as cheap as the plugin. last time i checked they were around 120-170€ and most of all - it was really rare and hard to get in good condition, if at all.

- these units were not really reliable, went broke very fast.

- the mk1 and mk2 especially were very noisy, and all of them were and still are very sensible to the input level... you couldn't really hit them with a lot of gain...

- buy one, have one - buy the plugin, have - well - have as many as the machine 's cpu can give you

- the advanced page allowes you to do stuff you would have dreamed about to do with a smallstone

so, yeah, you could certainly try to get one used, if you're lucky... but not really so much of a benefit, exept you just don't want to bother and play only solid hardware and refuse to use such things as a laptop or recepror or such on stage... then that would be the best for you...

Sonic Timeworks Phazer 88

I tried a demo of the DX version from a while back. Even old, this is still one of the best. Not available for download demo anymore. Very lush and wooshy like a hardware phaser pedal should sound like, and the signature phaser peak/drop sound is done right. Hopefully he develops this for VST like he has done with the EQ. Hoping it's the next effect he brings back. It will be up there with Big Rock and Soundtoys Phase Mistress.

Looks interesting. I'm still on the prowl for a really good phaser. Tried most of the suggestions here - except uhbik, but I don;t need any of the other plugs in that package so it'd be a waste.

Smartelectronicx is supposed to have an accurate emulation of the MXR phaser.

The simple truth is that the Bigrock nails the mk2 Smallstone 100% so are you actually contending all these other phaser FX are better than the real mk2 Smallstone?

I use a lot of different phasers, because of the different characteristics they provide.
Even ones that sound very similar to untrained ears.

But I have to say that BigRock definitely is at the top of the heap, for a rock solid, full bodied, space-age phaser sound. And its advanced page allows you to go beyond the Small Stone sound, into more or less extreme territory. For over the top or subtle phasing and modulation of audio material. Which are just as useful at times.

BigRock should be in every guitarist and electronic musician's toolbox, period.
It delivers the vintage Small Stone sound and beyond.

Big Rock is a thing of beauty for the classic Small Stone sound

U-he Uhbik P is also great and can do a lot more than classic phasering
