C'mon Michael, you wouldn't like to do this...
With the XY pads in Zebra?
I think microsound sampling is prime territory for a U-He product. Sure there are synths out there that playback samples but I haven't come across any that fulfill all of my sample mangling dreams.

Would be nice to do something like this with an U-He sampler but please _NOT_ within Zebra
Sadly youtube is blocked in China and mcnoone won't be able to watch the vid.
Cheers

sorry can't view youtube here, but that might change with a vpn thing looking into getting.
I did like how Roland had their attack samples in the D series synths though.
I just think it would not be a good thing for Zebra though.
Unless as Dennis said, being a separate thing altogether.

If anyone has a million or two to give to me, I'd love to ping Urs.Urs wrote: If anyone has, say, an idle million or two... ping me.

Can you see this?

I agree that a sampling feature should not shoe horned into Zebra. I think that the visualization of sound is an important part of sample manipulation and it would be really tough to fit a sufficiently detailed sample window into Zebra. There are however features of Zebra that I think would fit very well in a feature rich sampler. The XY pads are a good example of that.

Thanks, but mac or pc can't read flv here.
Maybe I find a codec or free player for it somewhere.
I agree, vector type controllers add a lot of usability to all instruments, soft or hardware.

O.k., that's a good argument! Many sounds plays and sounds really better in a synth than in a sampler, more organic and alive.mcnoone wrote:I don't like sampling in synths, except sampled waveform import, which Zebra can already do with waves2Zebra, or blubbery.
Zebra can do great sounds that can sometimes sound like they came from a sampler, and better. Better because you can alter more aspects of that sound, unlike samples.
On the other hand merging synth and samples sounds could give nice results, like in pocvecem examples.
If I remember right, the only softsynth which can do a combination of FM & sample playback was Seer Systems Reality from the year 1997!pocvecem wrote:I still love my old Yamaha SY99 for the combination of FM and simple sample playback.
Imagine what you could do with single samples and Zebra's OSC FX!
Oh yeah, I'm still dreaming...

It`s not a bug... it`s a feature!

I think Reason's Thor could do FM and ROM-bank sort of sampling? I don't know if they could be in each other's signal path or just layered.RexXx wrote: If I remember right, the only softsynth which can do a combination of FM & sample playback was Seer Systems Reality from the year 1997!
Ableton has a sampler (called ... 'Sampler') which allows for just one FM oscillator / envelope as modulator on the sample, it's reaaallly gritty and dirty. I recall layering it with Operator (economy-sized FM synth from Ableton) a few times, same envelope timings and FM algorithms and such so a few interesting things could be done with that.
Could definitely do that with Zebrify and Zebra, come to think of it - FMOs are available in Zebrify.

Damn i'm curious about this. Between Kontakt and Alchemy what could you possibly want/need ?

A lot actually. Custom window settings, samples as an FM source and destination, the ability to process incoming audio/record samples, ability to extract amp envelope from samples as modulation source, multiple playback positions within the same sample, the ability for new voices to pick up playback at the same position where currently active voices are playing... Those are the big ones for me anyway. That's before we get into all the possibilities of resynthesis.jupiter8 wrote:Damn i'm curious about this. Well yeah i'm sure there's tons of stuff to explore but remember this is meant to appeal to quite a large audience. Can you honestly say there's room for one more sampler between Alchemy and Kontakt in terms of units sold ? That's what got me most curious because it must be pretty awesome to compete with those 2.justin3am wrote:A lot actually. I doubt you'll get your money back on those ideas not that they are bad ideas in themselves i just don't see them appeal to most of the sampler buying crowd.

Maybe those ideas would appeal to the synthpler crowd then; new (and good) sound mangling approaches always find their niche.jupiter8 wrote:i just don't see them appeal to most of the sampler buying crowd.

Or to put it this way:imagine you have that 2 million $/euro whatever and think about investing in in the new U-He sampler. You fly over to Berlin and arrange a meeting so he can pitch his idea. Remember you're not giving him 2 mill because you're goodhearted, you do it because you think you can get your money back and then some.
And in comes Urs and present his million dollar idea: it could like have FM and stuff cough cough. And some novel way of manipulating the sample position hrrmmm. And that's pretty much it....... oh wait it'll have an envelope follower as well i nearly forgot. And it'll sample, most sampler doesn't actually do that now you know.

Niche is good but if you're looking to get a good return on over a million euros you'll need more than that. Just crunch the numbers. NI Kontakt is what 300 euros and Alchemy is thereabouts too. To get that million back plus interest you need to shift quite a lot of units. Either a niche one at low cost and shift a shitload of them and since it is a niche one that is a contradiction. Or a be-all end-all expensive one.bmrzycki wrote:Maybe those ideas would appeal to the synthpler crowd then; new (and good) sound mangling approaches always find their niche.jupiter8 wrote:i just don't see them appeal to most of the sampler buying crowd.
The thing that got me curious is he actually believes he can get away with this which must mean he either has a killer idea which is so cool i can't even imagine or he lost his marbles. That is the most interesting part not whether it'll have feature x or y.
