Keep on nagging, hehe.

There is a free version of Z3ta+ available. The demo. And a rather simple way to get around the audio dropouts. Seems to me that anyone who wants to participate can do so. Would actually be pretty cool if a demo user ends up defeating the full version users. 8)

Touché, with the demo it is still possible to join and ubercool if the winner used that as u say.
MajorBloodnok wrote:... but there is an argument that those who already own Z3ta+ are very likely to have played about with and to at least be familiar with it, whereas what normally happens in the OSC is that pretty much everyone is introduced to a new synth that they are unfamiliar with and therefore everyone has to learn it, as well as trying to get a decent production out of it in the 30 days or so each OSC takes (in my case this is ancient history of course).
Well this is true, but the time frame would still be the same for everyone?

As for having a freeware option for when there's a payware OSC, it would of course be possible, but might water out both competitions as well as make everything slightly confusing with rules and especially when it comes prizes etc.

But again, with the Z3ta+ demo it is at least possible to join this time and next time will be a freeware synth.

Don't mind me; I was just coming up with stuff off the top of my head (well, it beats working).

Given all the hostility I've observed throughout the thread, I wanted to give a vote of confidence to the bosses regarding the choice of synth this month. I believe z3ta+ is a great choice, and it was due time the contest was opened to other synths besides freeware ones... the spirit of the One Synth Challenge is maintained, after all, even if the synth is not free...

I'm one who has never participated because the usual choice of synth does not interest me (except the Tyrell one a couple of months ago... I'm kinda sorry I missed that one), but gotta admit that the selection of z3ta this month has me planning to put something together for the contest.

So thanks, and I hope it's not the last time that the OSC is opened beyond obscure freeware synths.

I've not detected any hostility in this thread and I don't think that any was intended by anyone. It's just the lively debate and interest which OSC always arouses.

V'ger and his cohorts have my full respect for organising OSC so efficiently (and carrying on from Tattiemannie); a contest made greater only by my inability to contribute regularly and therefore lower the musical average.

:smack: :hihi:

I have been tinkering with Z3 and I have reached a (probably controversial) conclusion. Commercial synths bore the crap out of me. I think what intrigues me about these quirky little free synths is that they each have a unique character. The challenge is in getting drum sounds out of a synth designed to emulate string instruments. I get inspired by the limitations. Commercial synths seem to have and do everything. there's a preset for everything. I've started working on a z3 track, but I'm not sure I'll finish it, as I'm just not feelin' it. I have not tried the version 2 demo yet, so let's see what happens...

The opposite has been true with me and Z3ta thus far. The extensive controls, morph options, and effects have actually made it difficult for me to produce a sound that's on par with the presets. It's almost like information overload. At least with some of the quirky free synths, I know where to start and what I can tweak to arrive at new sounds. With Z3ta... the possibilities seem almost endless.

Of course, this is probably because I'm a relatively novice synth user and sound designer.

I'm saying endless possibilities is the problem!

Ah! I see what you're saying now... about being inspired by limitations and Z3ta not really having any. I feel the same way, then. I actually started entering the OSC as a learning tool to get into electronic music. I figured that the limited scope of using only one synth would be a benefit... by narrowing my options down to something manageable. Thankfully, the synth that was up when I started was TAL NoiseMaker. I hate to think of what would have happened if I tried to start out with Z3ta!

Zebralette is free now. May be we should keep it in the list for coming months.

Hi,
(this is posted with the nick "sebaskopf", but I already requested to change it to "SJMmusic")
this is my first apperanace in OSC and the track I made ("SJMmusic - Prospekt") is a rather simple electronic track I made in two or three sessions.
I started with the riff you hear in the beginning and the end and then went through this little transition part to the simple middle part.

My host is REAPER 4, and the tracks with their FX:

- Master Track: Kjaerhus Classic Compressor, TLs Pocket Limiter

- Pad A: z3ta+
- Pad B: z3ta+, Ambience, GLow
- Bass: z3ta+, ReaComp, ReaEQ
- Bass Frzzzz: z3ta+, ReaEQ
- Synth: z3ta+
- True Bass: z3ta+
- Noise: z3ta+
- Drums:
- Bass Drum: z3ta+
- Claps: z3ta+
- Snare: z3ta+
- Crash: z3ta+, ReaEQ, Ambience

So 11 instances of z3ta+ (1.5.3) in total with 3x ReaEQ, 2xAmbience, ReaComp, Kjaerhus Classic Compressor, TLs Pocket Limiter and GLow.
(The Rea-Plugins can be downloaded free from REAPER here: http://reaper.fm/reaplugs/index.php)

So I hope I din't make any mistakes with tagging and... yeah thats it then :D

Post

...and one more thing; I'm working on yet another track (if I am allowed to post two tracks :S) which is built around the (probably well known) "8-Bar First Contact"-Preset - or is anybody else already working on that?
